Can we talk about the Mediterranean diet and fertility?

Because almost every week, I’m hearing from women who have been told that all they need to do is follow a Mediterranean diet to improve their fertility.

The problem?

The version many are being prescribed is often centred around:
• Lean protein sources
• Grains and legumes
• Green leafy vegetables

And while these foods can absolutely have a place, they may not provide the nutrient density needed to support optimal egg quality, hormone production, and fertility.

Even more importantly, if you’re dealing with digestive issues or underlying inflammation, some of these foods may not be working for your body in the way you’ve been led to believe.

Fertility nutrition isn’t about following a generic template.

It’s about understanding what your body needs.

Because the goal isn’t simply eating “healthy.”

The goal is creating a body that is nourished, resilient, and ready for pregnancy 🤰

We’ve all heard about microplastics, forever chemicals, and environmental toxins.

The good news?

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight.

Starting with these 4 simple changes will make a huge difference!👆🏻

Small shifts add up.

And when it comes to fertility, reducing your toxic load is one of the many ways you can better support your hormones and your body.

Save this for later 🌿

Unpopular opinion:

If you’re deficient in iron, vitamin D, or another micronutrient...

The first question isn’t:

“What supplement should I take?”

It’s:

“Why am I deficient in the first place?”

Because your body isn’t deficient in a synthetic vitamin.

It’s struggling to absorb, utilise, or retain nutrients for a reason.

Maybe that’s gut function.
Maybe it’s inflammation.
Maybe it’s stress.
Maybe it’s something else entirely.

But if we never ask why, we’re often just managing symptoms.

Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is focus on the root cause and prioritise foods that naturally contain the nutrients we’re lacking.

The goal isn’t to force nutrients into the body.

The goal is to create a body that can actually use them.

If what you’re doing was going to get you pregnant…
it would have by now.

I say that with care.

Because so many women I speak to are doing all the “right” things.

But the body that’s kept you functioning until now isn’t always the body that supports pregnancy.

And that means something has to change.

Not because you’ve failed — but because your body needs something different.

And yes… that can feel uncomfortable.

If this resonates, you’re not alone.

“I’m healthy… so why isn’t this working?”

This is something I hear often.

You’re eating well.
You’re exercising.
You’re taking care of yourself.

But fertility isn’t just about what looks healthy.

It’s about what your body experiences as safe and supported.

Undereating.
Over-exercising.
Constant stress.

Even when unintentional, these can shift your body away from reproduction.

Not because anything is “wrong”, but because your body is adapting.

When we understand that, we can start supporting the body differently.

This is the work we do inside The Journey.

If this resonated, you’re not alone.

High-intensity exercise isn’t always supportive when you’re trying to conceive.

Or when you’re pregnant.

I know this can be a hard shift — especially when we’re used to pushing our bodies,
or seeing others continue intense training throughout pregnancy.

But your body reads high-intensity movement differently.

Running.
Sprinting.
HIIT.
Anything that pushes your heart rate into a high cardiovascular range…

These all increase stress hormones
and can down-regulate your body’s capacity to conceive.

Because your body prioritises safety before reproduction.

And the same principle applies during pregnancy.

When your heart rate is consistently pushed too high,
blood flow is redirected toward your muscles
and away from the systems that support your baby.

It may not always cause an obvious issue.

But the question becomes —
is it supportive?

When you’re trying to conceive,
and during pregnancy,
your body doesn’t need more stress.

It needs stability.

Regulation.
Nourishment.
Support.

This is where things like walking, gentle strength work,
and slower, more intentional movement become so important.

Not because you need to do less —
but because your body needs something different.

If you’re navigating this and unsure what’s actually supportive right now,
you’re welcome to message me “Journey” and we can talk it through.
