As cheesy as it sounds, it's true.

None of us have our emotions all figured out. We are all on a continuous journey of understanding our bodies.

When we talk about therapy goals for children, emotional regulation often comes up as a goal for parents. "I want them to be able to regulate their emotions", "I want them to not meltdown over the smallest trigger".

Supporting children with emotional regulation is an important therapeutic goal, however we must re-frame this goal from having a clear end-point, to acknowledging that it is a continuous journey. No child can ever achieve emotional regulation for good. Rather, children are on a journey of understanding their internal sensations of their bodies (interoception), understanding what makes their bodies feel that way, and learning how to interact with others who also have their own unique emotions. This distinction is also important to help parents and children develop self-compassion. We wont always get it right - sometimes we will yell when we didnt mean to. Sometimes we will get upset over something seemingly 'small'. That's ok, it's a sign that we are human and we are still learning about our bodies. It's a moment where we can repair and reflect.

Are you are your family looking for support with emotional regulation? Reach out to us to discuss how occupational therapy could support you.

Occupational Therapists play an important role in supporting children's sensory regulation needs at school. If we put in the work to find out what helps our children regulate, it can really support our children at school!
