On World Hepatitis Day, we had the pleasure of meeting with Margie Nightingale MP, along with some community leaders she brought together, to discuss hepatitis and liver cancer awareness in the Inala-Richlands community.

Viral hepatitis affects many Queenslanders, yet many people living with hepatitis may not know they have the infection. The good news is that hepatitis B and C can be prevented, tested for, and treated — helping protect people's health and reduce the risk of liver cancer.

Improving awareness, increasing access to testing, and supporting treatment for all Queenslanders remains central to Hepatitis Queensland's work across the state.
We look forward to continuing this work with Margie as part of Queensland's push towards eliminating hepatitis B and C by 2030.

This World Hepatitis Day, Queensland's Chief Health Officer, Dr Marianne Gale, shares an important message about the impact of viral hepatitis and why testing, treatment and awareness matter.

Hepatitis B and hepatitis C can often have no symptoms, but early diagnosis and care can prevent serious liver disease and save lives. With highly effective treatments available for hepatitis C and ongoing care for hepatitis B, taking the next step has never been more important.

This World Hepatitis Day, let's work together to increase awareness, reduce stigma and improve access to testing and care across Queensland.

Hepatitis Queensland was pleased to be featured in the article, with our CEO, Dr Anna Hawkes, sharing insights into the risks of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and liver cancer associated with unsafe injecting practices.

As more people turn to injectable products, it's important to understand that sharing or reusing needles, syringes or multi-use vials can increase the risk of blood-borne viruses.

Knowing your risk and getting tested can make all the difference. Hepatitis C is curable, and hepatitis B can be effectively managed with early diagnosis and ongoing care.

🧀 Happy National Cheese Day! 🧀

And yes… cheese may have helped inspire one of the coolest tools in liver health, the FibroScan! 👀

Back in the early 2000s, French researchers were experimenting with ultrasound technology and discovered something surprising: soft things and hard things vibrate differently when sound waves pass through them.

Kind of like the difference between poking a wheel of brie 🧀 and a block of parmesan 🧀 one is soft and squishy, the other is firm and stiff!

That discovery led to the invention of the FibroScan, a quick, painless scan that measures liver stiffness. Why does that matter? Because when the liver becomes damaged or scarred (fibrosis), it gets stiffer over time.

Before FibroScan, many people needed a liver biopsy to check for liver damage. The FibroScan changed the game by making liver checks faster, safer and much less invasive.

Today, FibroScan helps people living with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease and other liver conditions understand their liver health in just minutes, no cheese required 😉🧀

📣 There’s still time to apply for a 2026 World Hepatitis Day Local Grant!

Hepatitis Queensland has extended applications until Friday 22 May to support local organisations and communities across Queensland to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and liver health.

This year’s World Hepatitis Day theme is “Your Liver, Your Life – Defeat Hepatitis” and we want to help bring this message to life in communities across the state.

💡 Grants of up to $500 or $1000 are available, along with $50 supermarket vouchers to support community morning teas and conversations around hepatitis.

Whether you’re planning:

✔️ A health promotion activity
✔️ An education session
✔️ Resource development
✔️ Or something completely unique
