"Are you ready to yarn with me?" - Don, Helping Solutions NDIS Coordinator
Celebrating 50 years of deadly!
Yesterday morning, our teams across Perth and WA, Melbourne and Cebu got together for a yarn to exchange cultural words and significant facts.
This year’s NAIDOC theme honours the generations who have continued to keep NAIDOC Week alive. This session was an amazing way to honour that work by taking initiative to learn about the country we live and work on, then teach one another.
Since we have a hugely diverse team, it was also opportunity to team build in a way that built genuine connection. Members of our teams shared facts and language from where they’re from (stemming as far as Geraldton and Karratha, Proserpine, the Blue Mountains, Vietnam, Pakistan, Kenya, and the Philippines!)
A few new words we learned included:
👋🏽 Kaya (Noongar for “Hello”)
👨🏾🍼 Yaboo (Gia for “Father”)
🏡 Baan (Thai for “house”)
🐍 Wagyl (Noongar for “Rainbow Serpent”)
🫶🏽 Mabuhay (Filipino for “To live”)
🌳 Kaarta Koomba (Noongar for “King’s Park”)
👋🏿 Yaama (Gamilaraay for “Hello”)
During the morning tea, we also spent time learning about the significance of Dreamtime stories and the different types of bush medicines. NAIDOC resources and maps were shared with the teams for further learning, and we all left a little more inspired to learn and share culture with one another. 🖤💛❤️
