STI SCREENING: Simple. Confidential. Important.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t always cause symptoms. You can feel completely well and still have an infection, which is why testing is an important part of looking after your s*xual health.

According to the Australian STI Management Guidelines, it may be a good idea to have an STI check if you:
• have a new s*xual partner
• have had unprotected or condomless s*x
• have been told a partner has an STI
• have had an STI within the past 12 months
• have multiple s*xual partners or other risk factors
• have symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain, sores, lumps or burning when urinating
• simply want reassurance and would like to be tested

🔬 What does STI screening involve?

Your GP will discuss your s*xual history confidentially and recommend testing based on your individual circumstances. This may include:
• Blood tests – including Hepatitis, HIV and syphilis
• Urine testing
• Self-collected or clinician-collected swabs
• Throat or re**al swabs where clinically indicated

Testing is tailored to you and there isn't one test that checks for every STI.

📱 Prefer to start with Telehealth?

STI and s*xual health consultations can often begin via phone or video consultation.

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible telehealth consultations and s*xual and reproductive health services have an exemption from the usual requirement to have attended the practice face-to-face within the previous 12 months.

Our GP can discuss your risks, organize appropriate pathology testing and arrange follow-up. You will still need to attend a pathology collection center for any required samples and our GP may recommend a face-to-face appointment if an examination is clinically necessary.

🔒 Your consultation is private and confidential.

There is no need to feel embarrassed about asking for an STI screen. Sexual health is a normal part of healthcare, and our GPs are here to provide respectful, non-judgmental care.

📞 Book an STI screening consultation with Medsana Medical Clinic, in person or via Telehealth.

Medicare eligibility and rebates are subject to MBS requirements and individual circumstances.

Acute Lower Back Pain: What You Need to Know

Acute lower back pain comes on suddenly and is very common. It may feel like a sharp pain, muscle spasm, stiffness or difficulty moving your back. In some cases, it can also spread into the buttock or leg.

The reassuring news is that most cases of acute lower back pain improve within days to a few weeks, especially with simple self-care.

💡 What to do in the first few days:
- Keep moving gently & avoid staying in bed for long periods
- Rest in comfortable positions, but avoid prolonged inactivity
- Continue light daily activities as tolerated
- Use short walks to help reduce stiffness
- Apply heat packs to ease muscle tightness and spasms
- Use simple pain relief if appropriate (check with your GP or pharmacist if unsure)

🩻 Do I need a scan straight away?
Usually not. Most acute back pain does not require X-rays or scans. Your GP will assess your symptoms and only arrange imaging if there are specific concerns.

👩‍⚕️ See your GP if:
- Pain is severe or not improving after a few days
- You are struggling to move or function normally
- Pain is spreading down your leg
- You experience numbness, tingling, or weakness
- The pain keeps returning or is affecting sleep or work

🚨 Seek urgent medical attention if you have:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- New weakness in your legs or difficulty walking
- Numbness in the groin or saddle area
- Fever or feeling very unwell with back pain
- Back pain after a significant fall or injury

If you experience loss of bladder/bowel control or significant weakness, call 000 immediately.

Your GP can help identify the cause of your acute back pain, rule out serious conditions and guide you through recovery.

✈️ Travelling overseas soon? Book your travel health consultation early.

Before you pack your bags, it’s important to check whether you need any travel vaccinations, medication or destination-specific health advice.

Different countries can have different health risks, including illnesses spread through food, water, mosquitoes, animals or close contact with others. Some vaccines may be recommended based on where you are going, what you’ll be doing, how long you’ll be away and your personal health history.

Examples of travel-related vaccines may include:

✅ Yellow fever – required for entry into some countries and may be mandatory if travelling to or from certain yellow fever risk areas. Our doctors can provide yellow fever vaccination for eligible travellers.
✅ Hepatitis A – often recommended for travel to areas where food and water safety may be a concern
✅ Typhoid – may be recommended for some destinations, especially where food or waterborne illness risk is higher
✅ Rabies – may be considered for longer trips, rural travel, animal exposure or high-risk activities
✅ Japanese encephalitis – may be recommended for some travellers to parts of Asia and the Western Pacific
✅ Meningococcal ACWY – required for some travel situations including certain pilgrimages
✅ Routine vaccines – such as influenza, COVID-19, tetanus and whooping cough boosters may also need review

💉 Good news: Our clinic stocks most travel vaccines on-site, making it easier and more convenient to get travel-ready in one place.

We also recommend checking the Smartraveller website before you travel for up-to-date destination advice, entry requirements, safety information and health alerts.

A travel consultation with your GP can help you understand what is recommended or required for your specific trip, including advice on medications as some countries have restrictions or requirements on certain medicines.

Some vaccines need multiple doses or time to take effect, so it’s best to book well before you travel - preferably 4–6 weeks.

Whether you’re travelling for a holiday, work, study or visiting family overseas, speak with our GPs for personalised travel health advice before you go.

Considering an IUD?

Medsana Medical Clinic offers several long-acting, reversible contraception options:

• Mirena — a hormonal IUD that may help make periods lighter
• Kyleena — a smaller hormonal IUD
• Copper IUD — a hormone-free option

IUDs are highly effective and can provide contraception for several years, depending on the device. The best option for you will depend on your health, periods, preferences and future plans.

A consultation with your GP gives you the opportunity to discuss suitability, possible side effects, costs and what to expect from the insertion procedure.

IUDs do not protect against s*xually transmitted infections. Individual suitability should be discussed with your GP.

🏥 Preparing for surgery? You may need a pre-surgical or pre-anaesthetic appointment.

This appointment helps your healthcare team understand your overall health and prepare you as safely as possible for surgery and anaesthesia. It is recommended that this assessment is completed at least one week before your planned surgery.

During the appointment, we will:
• Review your medical history and current health conditions
• Check your medications, allergies and previous reactions to anaesthesia
• Provide advice about medications that may need to be continued, adjusted or temporarily stopped
• Discuss any heart, lung, bleeding or other health concerns
• Review results of any recent investigations
• Arrange ECG, blood tests or other investigations if clinically required
• Identify health concerns that may need treatment before surgery

The purpose is not simply to “clear” you for surgery. It is to identify and manage potential risks, support appropriate planning and help your surgical and anaesthetic teams provide safer, more individualised care.

Please bring an up-to-date list of all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal supplements you take.

Always follow the specific fasting and medication instructions provided by your surgeon, anaesthetist or hospital.

Speak with our reception team if you have been asked to arrange a pre-surgical medical assessment with your GP.
