Hearing difficulties in children aren’t always obvious.

A child may respond when you call their name but still have difficulty hearing certain sounds, following speech in a busy classroom or understanding verbal instructions.

Sometimes the first clue isn’t β€œhearing” at all. It might be a concern about speech, language, concentration, learning or behaviour.

And even if your child passed their newborn hearing screening, hearing and ear health can change as they grow.

If you have concerns, a paediatric hearing assessment can help provide a clearer picture.

Adelaide Paediatrics offers paediatric audiology services at Mile End and Morphett Vale. πŸ‘‚

If you have a question, feel free to send us a DM or give us a call πŸ’Œ

Sometimes there isn’t one obvious symptom.

Your child might simply be quieter than usual. Eating differently. Sleeping more. Playing less. Behaving differently. Or there’s just something that makes you think, this isn’t quite them.

Parents notice the small changes because you know what β€œnormal” looks like for your child so if something about your child’s health or development is concerning you, it’s okay to ask.

You know your child. We bring the clinical expertise. Good paediatric care needs both. 🀍

And somehow, one child still doesn't have their shoes on. πŸ˜‚

Some parenting moments are just universal.

So amongst the appointments, the packed lunches, the school runs, the washing, the bedtime negotiations and the roughly 400 questions a day, consider this your permission slip to laugh at the chaos.

Here's to a beautifully chaotic school holidays.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. πŸŽ—οΈ

Behind every diagnosis is a child, a family and a community whose lives can change in an instant.

This month is an opportunity to raise awareness, support families navigating childhood cancer and recognise the researchers and healthcare professionals working towards better treatments and outcomes for children.

At Adelaide Paediatrics, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

If you are able, consider supporting or donating to organisations funding childhood cancer research this September. Every contribution helps move research forward. πŸ’›

Before you decide they're not listening.

A lot of the children we assess arrive labelled as distracted, dreamy or defiant. Some of them are. Some of them are hearing the world through a blur and doing an extraordinary job of covering for it.

Hearing also changes. Colds, fluid and a hard winter all shift it, so a clear result at four doesn't guarantee a clear result at six.

If something's been niggling, get it checked. Peace of mind counts as a result.

Our audiology team assesses children from babies right through to teens. Most appointments take under an hour, and you'll leave knowing where things stand. Send us a message and we'll walk you through what an assessment looks like at your child's age.

Communication underpins almost everything, including relationships, learning, behaviour, confidence and friendships, which helps to explain why speech pathology covers so much more than just "talking".

Speech pathologists provide support to help with understanding and using language, speech clarity, social communication, stuttering, and even feeding and swallowing difficulties.

Common reasons to reach out: feeding concerns, a late talker, speech that's hard to understand, difficulty following instructions, or social communication challenges. And because the early years are so fundamental to developing language, the value of early intervention cannot be overstated. 🀍

Got a question about your child's communication? Let's chat.

Every child has something to say. The job is finding how they can say it.

It's Speech Pathology Week, and this year's theme is Communication Creates Possibility. Our speechies would put it more plainly: there's always something a child is trying to get across, and the work is finding the route.

Sometimes that's sounds and words. Sometimes it's a picture card at four so the words can come at six. Sometimes it's teaching a parent to wait three seconds longer before filling the silence, which sounds like nothing and changes everything.

You don't need certainty to ask a question. If something's been sitting with you, that's reason enough.
