I've called the Central Highlands home for 33 years, and Emerald is where I've built my life and my practice. As the only AHPRA-registered acupuncturist in the CH region, I've worked hard to bring proper, evidence-informed Chinese medicine to our community.

This isn't a stopover for me. I'm not going anywhere, which means real continuity of care. Whether it's a chronic condition, fertility and hormonal health, pain or general wellbeing, you can count on me being here for the long haul.

I recently spent 23 days in China on an immersive Chinese medicine study trip, visiting herb farms and manufacturing facilities to see firsthand how the raw materials we use in clinic are grown, harvested, and processed into the herbal medicines I prescribe.

As Endometriosis Awareness Month draws to a close, I want to leave you with this:

To every woman in the Central Highlands and beyond who has spent years wondering why her pain wasn't taken seriously: I see you.

To every woman who has Googled symptoms at 2am, sat in an emergency department and been sent home with painkillers, or cried in frustration at another dismissed appointment: your experience is real, and it matters.

🚫 Endometriosis myths — let's set the record straight.

Even in 2026, there's so much misinformation floating around about endometriosis. Here are some of the most common myths I hear and the truth.

❌ MYTH: 'Bad period pain is normal.'
✅ TRUTH: Pain that disrupts your daily life is never normal. It's a signal worth investigating.

❌ MYTH: 'Having a baby will cure endometriosis.'
✅ TRUTH: Pregnancy may temporarily relieve symptoms for some women, but endometriosis typically returns. It is not a cure.

❌ MYTH: 'A hysterectomy will fix it.'
✅ TRUTH: Endometriosis is not confined to the uterus. Symptoms can persist after hysterectomy, especially if endometrial lesions elsewhere aren't addressed.

❌ MYTH: 'If your scans are clear, you don't have endo.'
✅ TRUTH: Standard ultrasound can miss most endometriosis. Specialised imaging or laparoscopy is often required.

❌ MYTH: 'You can't get pregnant with endometriosis.'
✅ TRUTH: Many women with endometriosis conceive naturally. Fertility outcomes depend on many factors.

Understanding your cycle is one of the most powerful things you can do if you have or suspect you have endometriosis.

In both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the menstrual cycle is a window into overall health. Tracking it carefully can reveal patterns, support diagnosis conversations, and guide treatment.

What's worth tracking?
🔹 Cycle length (day 1 of period to day 1 of next period)
🔹 Duration and heaviness of bleeding
🔹 Colour and consistency of blood (yes, this matters!)
🔹 Pain - when it starts, where it is, how severe
🔹 Spotting between periods
🔹 Mood, energy, and digestive changes throughout the cycle
🔹 Pain with intimacy, when in the cycle

In TCM, this information is gold. It helps me identify patterns, whether there's Heat, Cold, stagnation, or deficiency and tailor treatment accordingly.

My name is Sandi and I am the owner/practitioner at Emerald QLD Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine. I have lived in Emerald for 33 years and have certainly noticed the lack of some services here. I was once a gynaecology and fertility patient and am now thriving through menopause.

I am passionate about helping women live their best lives from puberty right through menopause. With that in mind, I studied my 🍑 off for 4 years, got my bachelors degree in Health science and opened up an acupuncture & Chinese medicine clinic in Emerald, Qld.

I have been fortunate to be mentored by The Fertile Life Method - Kirsten Wolfe founder Kirsten Wolfe who is known internationally as the “baby maker”.

Chinese medicine is regulated in Australia so I am registered with Ahpra. This means that I can legally and safely work alongside someone’s gynaecological or fertility provider to help with their condition.

Conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, recurrent pregnancy loss and symptoms of menopause are frequently misunderstood even in conventional medicine. I have been trained to interpret symptoms in the context of a patients full medical picture as well as recognise red flags and refer accordingly. Ahpra registration means I operate within a regulated system where integrity and accountability matter.

💛 We talk a lot about the physical symptoms of endometriosis.

But the emotional toll? That part often goes unsaid.

Living with a condition that is painful, poorly understood, and chronically under diagnosed takes a profound toll on mental health. Research shows that women with endometriosis experience significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression than the general population.

And it makes complete sense.

Years of being dismissed. Pain that interrupts work, relationships, intimacy, and plans. Grief around fertility. The exhaustion of advocating for yourself over and over again.

If you're navigating all of this — you are carrying a lot. And it's okay to say so.

In my practice I see this regularly. The emotional and physical are deeply connected — in TCM, the liver (which governs the smooth flow of Qi and emotion) is often involved in endometriosis presentations. Caring for your emotional landscape is part of caring for your body.

Some gentle reminders:
🔸 Your feelings about your diagnosis are valid
🔸 Seeking support — from practitioners, counsellors, or community — is strength
🔸 You don't have to be 'okay' about this

Traditional Chinese Medicine...what does that actually mean for someone with endometriosis?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of healthcare developed over thousands of years. It looks at the body as a whole, not just isolated symptoms and seeks to identify patterns of imbalance that contribute to disease.

In TCM, many presentations we associate with endometriosis such as painful periods, pelvic congestion, clotting, fatigue, hormonal irregularity are understood through the lens of Blood stagnation, Qi deficiency, and Cold or Heat patterns in the body.

What might a TCM approach involve?

🔹 Acupuncture — to support circulation, reduce pain, and regulate the nervous system
🔹 Chinese Herbal Medicine — personalised formulas to address underlying patterns

Endometriosis and fertility...

One of the most feared aspects of an endometriosis diagnosis is the impact on fertility. And while the statistics can feel daunting, there's important nuance that often gets lost.

The facts:
🔸 Around 30–50% of women with endometriosis experience fertility challenges
🔸 But that means 50–70% conceive naturally or with minimal assistance
🔸 Endometriosis does not automatically mean infertility
🔸 Early diagnosis and management can protect fertility over time
