R U OK? Day is a reminder to check in with the people around us, but meaningful conversations about mental health matter every day.

If someone you know seems different, withdrawn, or is having a difficult time, asking how they are and genuinely listening can be a good place to start.

If you are concerned about your own mental health, speaking with your GP or another qualified healthcare professional can help you understand what support may be appropriate.

Depression treatment isn't one size fits all.

Some people continue to experience symptoms despite medication, psychological therapy or other approaches. If that happens, it may be time to speak with your GP or psychiatrist about reviewing your treatment plan.

Our latest article looks at when a treatment review may be appropriate, what treatment-resistant depression means, and where treatments such as TMS may fit for some patients following psychiatric assessment.

Around 60% of people with depression also experience anxiety symptoms 🧠💙

Depression and anxiety often occur together, which can make symptoms feel more complex and harder to manage. This overlap may affect mood, sleep, energy, and day-to-day functioning.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of both, you’re not alone - and support is available.

Understanding what you’re experiencing is an important first step toward getting help that works for you.

Not feeling like yourself lately? 🧠💙

When your mood, energy, or motivation feels different from usual, it can be a sign that your mental health is under strain. This might show up as feeling flat, disconnected, more irritable, or simply not quite “you.”

These changes are more common than many people realise, and they don’t always pass on their own. Support is available, and there are treatment options that may help when things aren’t improving.

If you’d like to speak with our friendly team or learn more about available options, please call (02) 4314 7000.

TMS is generally well-tolerated and associated with few side effects 🧠💙

The most common side effect is a mild headache, reported in around 1 in 5 patients. These headaches usually improve as treatment continues and can often be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Some people may also experience mild tingling of the forehead muscles, which typically reduces over time, and treatment settings can be adjusted to improve comfort.

Because TMS uses a magnetic pulse, the machine produces a repetitive clicking sound. Earplugs are provided during treatment, and in some cases headphones may also be used for added comfort, particularly for patients sensitive to sound.

Unlike some antidepressant medications, TMS is not associated with side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, sedation, or gastrointestinal upset.

The most serious risk, though very rare, is seizure. At TMS Erina, strict safety guidelines are followed to minimise this risk, and all patients undergo a thorough medical assessment before treatment begins.

In celebration of International Dog Day 🐾💙

Today we’re celebrating the comfort, joy, and unconditional love that dogs bring into our lives - and we’re lucky to have not one, but two special companions in our TMS Erina family: Chewy and Maisey 🐶🐶

Chewy and Maisey are known for their calming presence and friendly nature, often bringing a sense of ease and comfort to both patients and staff. Whether it’s a gentle greeting, a quiet moment nearby, or simply their reassuring presence, they help create a warm and welcoming environment within the clinic.

It’s a reminder of the simple but powerful role connection and companionship can play in supporting mental wellbeing.

Small habits matter 🌿💙

When it comes to mental wellbeing, small everyday actions can have a meaningful impact over time. Things like getting outside in natural light, staying connected with others, prioritising rest, moving your body, or taking a moment to slow down can all help support your nervous system and overall wellbeing.

While small habits may not solve everything, they can be an important part of caring for your mental health - especially during stressful or overwhelming periods.

And if things still feel difficult, support is available. You don’t have to navigate it alone.

Bulk-billed Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may be available for eligible patients!

To qualify, patients generally need to be 18 years or older, have a diagnosis of major depressive episode, and have not experienced sufficient improvement after trying at least two different antidepressant medications. Psychological therapy is also typically required (unless deemed inappropriate), and a GP or psychiatrist referral is needed. Patients must also not have previously received TMS treatment.

Before starting, a thorough suitability assessment is completed by the psychiatrists at TMS Erina to ensure the treatment is appropriate for each individual.

If you’d like to learn more about eligibility or speak with our team, please call (02) 4314 7000.
