LAST CHANCE TO NAME OUR NEWEST TEAM MEMBER!

Our little Crown Court-born baby swordtail is still waiting for a name.

And so far, the competition is pretty fierce. Suggestions include:

๐ŸŸ Nemo (a classic)
โšก Lightning (ambitious for something so tiny)
๐Ÿ† EOM, aka Employee of the Month (which, frankly, could be a strong contender given the competition around here!)

But there's still time to throw your suggestion into the ring!

You can enter ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ using our very fancy, extremely sparkly ballot box in the Crown Court waiting room, or ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ via the link below.

Entries close 31 ๐˜–๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, so get those creative juices flowing!

Terrible fish puns remain very much encouraged!!!

Our annual Halloween gallery is back!

A few years ago, we promised the therapy dogs we'd stop dressing them up for Halloween.

We did NOT promise to stop finding increasingly ridiculous ways to celebrate it.

And so, the Halloween canvases were born!

This year's masterpieces are on display at the clinic until 31 October. Come and admire our very cute (and considerably less inconvenienced) models.

For a lot of parents, consent is one of those conversations they assume theyโ€™ll deal with โ€œlaterโ€.

When their kids start dating.
When s*x becomes relevant.
When thereโ€™s a reason to worry.

But ideally, we want to have done a lot of the groundwork before they ever get to that point.

Because consent isnโ€™t just about s*x.

Itโ€™s about boundaries, empathy, disappointment, noticing when someone is uncomfortable, and understanding that even when you donโ€™t like or understand another personโ€™s โ€œnoโ€, you still have to respect it.

And kids start learning all of that from us much earlier than we probably realise.

The carousel gives you the practical version: what consent education can look like from preschool through to the teenage years.

The full blog goes a bit further.

It includes discussion of the recent Cornell University allegations, victim-blaming, bystander responsibility, and the kinds of questions adults ask when stories like this hit the news. So a gentle content note before you click through: the post refers to s*xual violence.

It also looks at why consent education needs to include more than simply teaching our kids not to harm someone directly.

We also want them to recognise when somebody else may be unsafe, vulnerable or unable to advocate for themselves, and to understand that doing nothing is still a choice.

Because these skills donโ€™t magically appear at 16 or 21.

We build them.

Bit by bit, conversation by conversation, long before the stakes get that high.

This is an excerpt from one of the couples therapy webinars Mat and I recorded for the SPARKSFIRE Professional Development series for mental health clinicians.

In this bit, we were talking about our own relationship โ€” and the very much ongoing process of trying to apply the same foundational relationship skills we talk about with couples ourselves.

More specifically, we were talking about what changed as we learned more about our different neurotypes so late in our lives and so late in our relationship: and how curiosity, communication and compromise helped us make sense of those differences.

This is not because we feel we've mastered all of this! ๐Ÿ˜†

We definitely havenโ€™t - and we're definitely not kidding about it being an ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ process!

We're sharing this purely because these are some of the things weโ€™ve found helpful personally, and professionally, when it comes to building and sustaining relationships for the long haul.

So what about you? What are your best relationship green flags?

When Walter first arrived at 12 Points straight from the aquarium, he was NOT impressed about the whole situation (he really hadn't enjoyed the car ride!) He was so obviously unimpressed, in fact, that one of our clients made him his very own โ€œMr Grumpy Pantsโ€ sign. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But that was a year ago.

That client came back to see us recently and, amazingly, had kept his sign safe that whole time so she could bring it back for him.

Walter, meanwhile, has settled beautifully into life at 12 Points and is considerably less grumpy these days. He does, however, appear quite pleased to have his custom artwork up!

And I just love the reminder that mood really is a state.

Even the really crappy ones pass eventually. How you feel right now isnโ€™t necessarily how youโ€™ll feel tomorrow, next month, or the next time we see you.

Just ask Mr Grumpy Pants. ๐Ÿ˜‚

One of the things all of the therapists here at 12 Points really wish parents and kids knew is that:

Actually, sometimes, itโ€™s the smartest possible answer.

Because there is an awful lot of certainty floating around at the moment.

Online.

In the media.

In friendship groups.

From influencers with a ring light and a remarkable (and often unfounded) sense of confidence. ๐Ÿ˜

And - eventually - kids are going to have to make sense of all of it on their own.

We canโ€™t fact-check the world for them forever.

What we ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฃ do is teach them to stop and ask:

And, perhaps the hardest bit - but the bit we can model ourselves.

We can let them hear us say:

Or even - shockingly:

Because critical thinking isnโ€™t teaching our kids to question everyone else while assuming ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆโ€™๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ always right.

Itโ€™s teaching them ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ to think for themselves.

Even when - ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜บ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜บ - that means questioning us.

Green flags arenโ€™t about always agreeing on everything.

Theyโ€™re about being able to disagree without turning the other person into the problem.

You can be frustrated, hurt, or completely fed up with the issue, without getting nasty or personal about it.

At the end of the day - if you're on the same team - it should feel and look like it!

What if Hogwarts had a psychology department?

Honestly, it probably would have been far more useful than Divination - no offence, Professor Trelawney.

One of the awesome things about stories like Harry Potter is that they can give us a different way to talk about things that are sometimes hard to explain - especially with kids and teens.

Dementors can help us talk about depression.

Boggarts give us a way into conversations about anxiety and fear.

And the Room of Requirement? Thereโ€™s actually a pretty good therapy analogy hiding in there.

None of these are perfect clinical metaphors โ€” nor do they need to be. Sometimes having a familiar story, or character gives us just enough distance to start talking about something that otherwise feels a bit too big or abstract.

So have a swipe through (and check out our little wizard Rory) โ€” and then you can read the full post here:

The dogs would like to thank us for occasionally rewarding the exact nonsense weโ€™re trying to discourage. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Like the time Jersey here stuck her head in someoneโ€™s handbag and extracted all the ham from a sandwich. A sandwich that 10 seconds ago had been COMPLETELY WRAPPED IN GLAD WRAP.

From that day forward, Jersey couldnโ€™t pass a bag without investigating. Just in case it turned out to be another magical HAM-bag. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Itโ€™s easy to accidentally do this with kids, too.

The arguing gets our full attention. The taking turns, asking nicely or being gentle with the dog? Easy to miss when youโ€™re trying to fit the rest of life into those five minutes between crises.

Sometimes, even a telling-off can become a reliable way to get a moment of connection. And โ€œbad attentionโ€ can feel better than no attention at all.

So notice the stuff youโ€™d like to see more of. And let them know you noticed.

Be specific: โ€œYou waited until sheโ€™d finished. Thanks for giving her a turn.โ€

Weโ€™re not aiming to ignore distress or declare every mangled finger painting a Michelangelo masterpiece, of course.

Weโ€™re just making sure the tricky moments arenโ€™t the only ones where they know weโ€™re paying attention.

Try a little experiment this week: look for the things your kids are doing that youโ€™d love to see more of, and let them know you noticed.

You might be surprised by how much was already happening in the background of the rest of life. ๐Ÿ˜‰
