It's been a weird old winter here in Perth. Winter classes usually mean ducking the rain when going to or from the studio. Running around frantically trying to cover my glasses so they don't get speckles of water on them 🙄

This week was one of the only mornings I can remember so far where I had to do the rain dance dodge. My usual technique is to look, hug everything close and run.

Nick usually watches from afar, reminding me that I'm still getting the same amount of wet as if I walked.

In my mind, that's not right 😆 - the quicker I go, the less wet I get, right?! Unless he hasn't unlocked the car yet 🤣

Apparently Mythbusters' first experiment said that running didn't keep you drier... but then did the test again and said that running did keep you drier 🥳

This question has had researchers divided since the 70s 🤯

Speaking of myths worth busting - yoga has a few too.

"I have to be flexible to do yoga."

We hear this myth so often, and it's completely untrue and unrealistic for most of us.

Or how about "Yoga is just physical exercises"? Nope, 100% not true! The philosophy of yoga is vast and encompassing and starts with the physical and ends with returning to your natural state of pure bliss ✨

And then there is "Vinyasa". This one means fast flowing yoga in English, right? Not correct either.

Let's talk about what vinyasa really means.

When you have many thousands of years of knowledge to unravel and explore, it's understandable that things can get a little skewed and misunderstood.

Yes the word vinyasa is used a lot to describe a particular style of yoga (usually fast, flowing, aerobic) however its direct translation is very different from this modern understanding.

Vinyasa is composed of two Sanskrit words - vi which means "in a special way" and nyasa meaning "to place, arrange" - Vinyasa is therefore "to place in a special way".

Every time you come to class, you have an experience of vinyasa. The breath, the movement, the meditation all carefully chosen to lead you towards an experience of joy and inner peace 💕

We're all searching for the meaning of life.

What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?

Some of us may think it's 42.

For those of us who don't deal with maths anymore, it might be yoga ☺️

Life is generally a continuum of events, moving from smooth to topsy turvy in a moment, but basically everything just humming along with little room for deep thinking.

But every so often, the universe pops up with a little "surprise" to shove your focus to something more profound.

Who am I? Truly?

What am I doing here? What's my purpose in life?

Without an anchor to guide you, these dark night of the soul moments can feel overwhelming. As if simply adulting wasn't hard enough, now there's all this important stuff to contemplate 🫣

Yoga has always been there as my anchor. The books to return to. A way to move and feel connected to myself, physically and inwardly. Practical tools to help me experience my true self, my true reality.

What is yoga and these practical tools though? Although we practice a lot of physical movements, yoga is more than asana. We get tiny glimpses of connection to Self when moving on the mat, however the real yoga actually begins when we sit to breathe and be still 🧘🏻‍♀️

So the question arises, why do we practice asana (postures) at all? Every part of practice plays an important part in the whole - you can't bake a cake unless you have all of the ingredients 😊

This is the same for yoga - asana to shift energy and create comfort in your body, savasana for integration and rest, pranayama to shift consciousness and finally meditation for the mind to find inner peace ✨

You can read every yoga book under the sun and never truly know yoga and its gifts. Yoga is there to be lived, experienced and shared.

By transcending body and mind, yoga enables you to experience your infinite, limitless true nature. Love, light, divinity, connection. Who you truly are 💕

I heard the little tippy taps on the tiles before I noticed her entry. The door gently head-butted open. Her delicate sniffs of my face. Olive coming to check out how I was going in savasana.

Quietly (as quietly as a staffy can 🤣) doing circles of my still body, holding back the urge to pounce and wake me up. It was early morning and she was ready for cuddles and scratches.

You might recognise the place I was - the after yoga glow or post meditation clarity. That full-bodied feeling of being both deeply relaxed and quietly buzzing with energy 🥰

At one, connected with yourself, your heart, your people, your pets, the universe.

I felt it, Olive could feel it, and she was ready for me to start the day with her.

This feeling of connection and flow is a special kind of place, where your focus feels effortless and it's possible to experience calm energy - both peaceful and fully present.

Yoga not only tells us but shows us that yes, we can be both grounded and energised at the same time 💕

Yoga gives you the space to be curious, to explore your own experience of this place. Discovering how steadiness and calmness arise as you open your body, mind and soul and invite heart energy to flow 💗

There's a yogic principle called tapas that doesn't translate particularly well into English.

"Discipline" sounds punishing. "Austerity" sounds dramatic. But what it actually means in practice is much quieter than either of those things.

It's doing the hard things. The things that most people avoid because they're uncomfortable or confronting.

And if you want to transform your life, tapas can help.

Generating tapas means to cultivate inner heat - the energy and drive to do things that are challenging. To have self-discipline, the inner fire and the willingness to make choices for the sake of your own growth and transformation.

It's not about being harsh to yourself or punishing yourself when you trip up. It's about consistently choosing actions that align with your higher goals (hence why setting a sankalpa or intention is such an important aspect of practice).

Tapas teaches us that small, consistent actions are more effective than random efforts. So attending one Yoga class every week will create more transformation than a 5 day retreat once a year.

Tapas encourages a welcoming attitude towards discomfort, knowing that this is part of growth rather than something to avoid.

And cultivating tapas means freedom. Creating structure and routine in life, creating positive habits to support your wellbeing. Greater freedom and fulfilment in life because you know deep down that you are capable of doing hard things!

A good place to start is to choose one area of your life where you want to be more streamlined and commit to putting your focus there.

Can you do a whole week of preparing lunch at home and taking it to work?

How about swapping out the afternoon coffee for chamomile tea?

Or getting up 15 minutes early to stretch - 5 breaths reaching up, 5 breaths touching your toes, 5 breaths twisting one way, then the next?

Amazing things happen when we exercise the tapas muscle - and if you want a clear mind and radiant body, it's worth giving it a go 💕

Do you have to believe in yoga for it to work?

Make yourself comfy on your chair and let's try something...

Place your feet on the floor so they feel connected to something solid.

Take a deep breath in, and then lift up your spine. Roll your shoulders up and back.

Soften your eyes and place one hand on your belly.

Breathe in deeply into your belly, then breathe out from your belly.

Breathe into belly again and count to 4, then exhale and count to 4.

Do this again. And again. And again until you feel... something.

What is the something? Calmness, clarity, softness...?

It's different for all of us, but generally has something to do with balancing your nervous system.

Did you just practice yoga? Technically yes - you've just practiced the Yogic techniques of sama vritti and adham pranayama. But we generally call this belly breathing 😊

Did it work? Was there a change in your state of mind, your heart beat, your breath?

So, to come back to the question - did you have to believe in anything for the practices to work?

You'll find that the answer is no - because breathing and moving is so natural for us, yoga doesn't ask us to believe in anything or anyone. Yoga is simply allowing us to optimise human functioning.

Coming to class helps to add layers to this experience, adding in movement, stillness and contemplation, to change the inner state, the feelings, the sensations.

Show up as you are. Your yoga practice takes care of the rest 💕
