Kai has started joining community outings during his social support days, visiting cafés, ordering food, and going to movies. These experiences help him build independence, social confidence, and money management skills.

Sometimes behaviour is not about “being difficult”. Sometimes it is communication.

For many people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Intellectual Disability, communicating needs, discomfort, overwhelm or frustration can be incredibly difficult. When words are hard to access, behaviours can become another way of expressing what is happening internally.

This might look like:
- Physical aggression
- Yelling or verbal distress
- Running away or leaving situations unexpectedly
- Other behaviours linked to overwhelm, anxiety or unmet needs

Shifting the question from “How do we stop this behaviour?” to “What might this person be trying to communicate?” can change how support is provided.

At Plus Behaviour Support, we believe understanding behaviour starts with understanding the person. Through Positive Behaviour Support, we work alongside participants, families and support networks to reduce distress, build communication, and create environments where individuals feel safe, supported and understood.

Good behaviour support doesn’t start with a textbook. It starts with listening.

To the person.
To family.
To the support workers and therapists who see them every day.

Carla from our team says that’s where the power is - because no one knows the person better than the people around them.

That’s how we build plans that actually work. Want to learn more about how Plus Behaviour Support can help? Link in bio.

Gabrielle is in her element in the kitchen. She loves cooking and baking, and she’s always trying new treats to share with friends at Plus.

It’s more than just good food. It’s creativity, independence, and connection. The best conversations happen when there’s something homemade on the table.

Keep the recipes coming, Gabrielle.

A real highlight lately has been watching Lindsey grow more confident out in the community.

He and his support workers jumped on the ferry from Church Point and cruised around Pittwater, stopping off along the way. Just a relaxed day out, taking in the views, feeling the sun, and breathing in that salt air.

Moments like this are why we do what we do. Independence isn’t always about big milestones. Sometimes it’s choosing where to go, enjoying the journey, and knowing you’ve got the right support beside you.

Masato’s been embracing new experiences lately, recently heading out kayaking on Narrabeen Lake with his support workers.

Community engagement is an important goal for him, so it’s been wonderful to see him out there giving it a go, building confidence, and having fun at the same time.

There’s nothing better than watching someone try something new and love it. That’s what positive and meaningful experiences are all about.

'Person-centred practice' isn’t a buzzword. It means your plan shouldn’t look like anyone else’s.

Carla from our team puts it clearly: support that meets you where you are, not where someone else thinks you should be.

That’s how we work. Every plan built around the person, not the template.

Andy has been working hard on goals that matter to him. Lately he’s been focusing on practical life skills that build independence for life beyond Plus.

One of those skills is writing his own shopping list. It seems small, but it’s a big step. Thinking about what he needs, planning ahead, putting pen to paper, and taking ownership of the task.

It’s those everyday moments that add up. Confidence grows when you're empowered to learn and develop your skills.
