This week, both the Victorian Government and the Victorian Opposition made significant announcements about new programs to screen for autism and developmental delay in children.

We know many of you will want to understand what these mean, so here's a quick summary.

As part of the Thriving Kids program, which will launch in October this year, the Victorian Government has announced two new developmental assessments that will be available for every child: one before kinder and one before primary school. These won't be formal autism diagnoses, but trained clinicians and allied health professionals will identify developmental delays and connect families with support. They'll be based in maternal and child health centres, kinders and early parenting centres.

The Victorian Opposition has announced 'Successful School Starters'. Under the plan, occupational therapists and speech pathologists would be embedded in the existing Primary School Nursing Program from Term 1, 2028. Starting in Prep, specialists would observe students, help identify learning and developmental needs, and guide families toward assessment and diagnosis. The plan also includes a $500 subsidy toward a first specialist appointment if a formal diagnosis is needed.

We welcome the Government's clarity on Thriving Kids, and we welcome the Opposition's focus on supporting neurodivergent children and their families at school.

We'll continue to work with the Government as it rolls out Thriving Kids, keeping you informed along the way. 🩵

🌈 17th of May
❤️ We celebrate
🌏 IDAHOBIT

Today is the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination! 🌈

Why May 17? It was on this day in 1990 that homosexuality was removed from the WHO Classification of Diseases - a historic step towards inclusion. Three decades later, despite how far we’ve come, the LGBTQIA+ community unfortunately still faces discrimination.

Days like today offer all of us the opportunity to visibly stand against discrimination. LGBTQIA+ community and allies alike, today we take action to make the world more inclusive.

This year, we couldn’t be prouder of the massive wave of allyship, pride, and visibility we’ve seen across workplaces, schools, and communities.

To every single person who’s gone rainbow: you have sent SUCH a vital message of hope, support, and safety to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Whether you wore a rainbow ribbon, started a conversation, hosted a fundraiser, shared IDAHOBIT online, or hung up a poster, thank you. Each action contributes to building a more inclusive future.

Thank you for showing up proudly with us!

Happy Mother’s Day!

We wish the Mums across our community a moment of peace, reflection, and gratitude today.

Thank you for all you do for others:

Maintaining patience in pursuit of answers,
Practising resilience after challenging times,
Offering grace when gratitude is missing from others.

Mums are remarkable, irreplaceable, uniquely crafted to fit their own family’s journey.

Special. One of a kind. Wonderful.

Happy Mother’s Day.

🫤 The release of Autistic Barbie has been a topic of controversy pitting capitalism against representation.

❤️ ‘It doesn’t need to be perfect to be powerful.’

🙌 Barbie allows the next generation to grow up with messages about value and belonging.

🙋‍♀️ Representation matters.

Mattel’s latest doll has stirred conversations about the commercialisation of autism, but the benefits of this kind of representation cannot be understated, say University of Melbourne experts
