🏃‍♀️ Sore after training or something more?

A bit of muscle soreness after exercise is completely normal.

But if you’re constantly feeling tight, recovering slower than usual, or the same area keeps flaring up every time you train, your body might be asking for a little more attention.

Recovery isn’t just about taking a day off. It’s about giving your body the best opportunity to move well again.

Many people use Bowen Therapy alongside their training to help manage muscle tightness, improve comfort and support recovery between sessions.

Whether you’re a weekend walker, gym goer, runner or competitive athlete, looking after your body now can help keep you doing what you love for longer. 🌿

🌿 Why is Bowen Therapy so gentle?

A common common question I hear is, “How can something so gentle make a difference?”

It’s a fair question.

Many hands on therapies use firm pressure to work directly on muscles and soft tissues. Bowen takes a different approach.

Rather than trying to force a muscle to relax, Bowen uses gentle, precise moves over muscles, tendons and fascia. These are followed by short pauses, giving your body time to process and respond to the treatment.

The aim isn’t to “fix” your body with pressure. It’s to encourage your body to respond in its own way.

Everyone experiences Bowen differently. Some people notice they feel more relaxed during the session, while others notice changes over the following days.

Sometimes, less really can be more. 🌿

⚡ Fight or flight isn’t just for emergencies

When people hear “fight or flight,” they usually think of something dramatic.

But your nervous system can switch into that same response during everyday life too.

✨ A stressful week at work.
✨ Running from one thing to the next.
✨ Poor sleep.
✨ Juggling a million things.

Your body responds by tightening muscles, changing your breathing and getting you ready to cope.

That’s not a bad thing. It’s exactly what it’s designed to do.

The problem is when life stays busy and your body doesn’t get many chances to switch back into recovery mode.

That’s why making time to slow down is just as important as keeping up.

💡 Did you know Bowen Therapy is about more than just sports recovery?

People seek Bowen for all sorts of reasons.

From muscle tightness and persistent aches to stress, tension and simply wanting to feel more comfortable in their body, Bowen is a gentle therapy that’s tailored to the individual.

No two people walk through the door with the same story, which is why no two Bowen sessions are exactly the same.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Bowen Therapy might be right for you, feel free to get in touch. I’d be happy to answer any questions. 🌿

Most of us have heard the terms fight or flight and rest and digest, but what do they actually mean?

Think of your nervous system like the accelerator and brake in your car. You need both for the journey.

Your autonomic nervous system is constantly working behind the scenes, helping your body respond to everything from physical danger to everyday stress. It has two main branches that work together throughout the day.

⚡ Sympathetic nervous system (“go mode” or the accelerator)

This is your body’s survival response. It increases your heart rate, changes your breathing, tightens your muscles and prepares you to respond to a challenge. Whether you’re avoiding a car accident, rushing to meet a deadline or juggling a busy week, this system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do.

🌿 Parasympathetic nervous system (“recovery mode” or the brake)

Once the challenge has passed, this system helps your body slow down again. Your heart rate settles, your breathing becomes calmer, digestion resumes and your body can focus on rest, recovery and repair.

The goal isn’t to avoid stress, we need our sympathetic nervous system.

The challenge is that many of us spend so much time with our foot on the accelerator that we don’t give our bodies enough opportunities to use the brake.

Over time, this may contribute to muscle tension, increased sensitivity to pain, fatigue, poor sleep and the feeling of always being “on.”

One of the things that makes Bowen so unique is its gentle approach. Rather than forcing muscles to change, Bowen uses gentle movements followed by pauses, creating an opportunity for the body to slow down.

Giving your body opportunities to slow down and recover can play an important role in managing pain, easing muscle tension and supporting your overall wellbeing. 🌿

We often think of stress as something that only affects our minds.

But our bodies feel it too.

Tight shoulders, a sore neck, jaw clenching, headaches or that constant feeling of tension can all be signs that your body has been under pressure.

Stress isn’t the only cause of pain and tension, but it can absolutely play a role.

Your body wasn’t designed to stay in “go mode” all the time. Sometimes it simply needs the opportunity to slow down. 🤍
