Meet Cody 👋

Since moving into an apartment at The Botanic in Melbourne, Cody has been living more independently, supported at home through genU's Onsite Shared Support services.

With the right support in place at home, Cody is catching public transport, studying Marketing at RMIT, managing his finances, and enjoying life with his cat, Jinxy. 🐱

"Since living here, my life has blossomed. It's shown me that I am so much more capable," says Cody.

His story is a reminder of what's possible when the right supports are delivered in right environment.

At genU, disability living 'done right' is more than housing — it's about supporting our clients' independence, choice and opportunity in everyday life, with trusted services and client voice at the centre of everything we do.

The genU Outreach team recently attended the "Conversations That Matter" event hosted by the Give Where You Live Foundation, joining local businesses and community organisations for important discussions about homelessness and the challenges many people continue to face.

The team heard from Nedd brockmann, ultramarathon runner and 2024 NSW Young Australian of the Year, whose fundraising efforts have generated more than $10 million to support people experiencing homelessness through his charity partner, We Are Mobilise. His story and message left a lasting impression.

Presentations from Amy Hunter from The Outpost Inc., Josephine Taylor from Meli, and lived experience advocate Jessie Moore also provided valuable insights that reflected many of the experiences our team sees and supports every day through Outreach services.

We're grateful for our ongoing partnership with We Are Mobilise. Together, we've helped distribute more than $103,000 to support people experiencing homelessness, assisting individuals to access housing and build sustainable pathways forward.

Partnerships like these help create meaningful change and strengthen support for people across our community.

Supporting connection, wellbeing and confidence through partnership 💙

The genU Outreach SRS OAP team is proud to partner with Reclink Australia to deliver a beginner-friendly aqua fitness program at Leisurelink Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

This program gives residents of supported residential services the opportunity to improve physical and mental wellbeing in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Through water-based exercise, social connection and shared support, participants are building confidence, working towards tailored personal goals and trying something new.

Residents have shared positive feedback, with many highlighting improved strength, better mental health and having something to look forward to each week.

A huge thank you to the collaborative efforts of Joseph from Reclink, Sarah and Sophie from genU SRS OAP, and Ryan from Westpeak Belmont SRS for helping make this program possible.

Today we acknowledge National Sorry Day at genU.

We remember and acknowledge the profound injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, now known as ‘The Stolen Generations’. We honour the strength, resilience and courage of survivors and their families, and recognise that historical injustices are an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples and communities.

National Sorry Day is for healing, for reconciliation and for ensuring such injustices never happen again. At genU, we stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities forever connected to The Stolen Generations.

When Anne joined one of our SIL homes in High Wycombe, she brought a fierce determination to live life on her terms. Despite limited vision and anxiety about stepping outside her routine, Anne showed incredible resilience every single day.

Our team saw her potential and stood beside her through one of the biggest milestones of her life — eye surgery.

Together with Anne, her therapy team, support workers and leadership team, we built trust with Anne, worked through challenges and supported her every step of the journey. There were nerves, setbacks and moments of uncertainty, but Anne kept showing us what courage looks like.

Today, Anne is thriving. She’s more confident, heading out into the community, planning outings, sharing stories, and keeping everyone updated on her beloved Eagles footy scores. Most importantly, she’s embracing new experiences with confidence and joy.

Sending a big congratulations to Anne for showing us all what determination can achieve.

Bev has recently started working with genU Occupational Therapist Natalie, with a focus on supporting her safety and independence at home. Together they’ve been looking at equipment and home modification options that can help Bev keep doing the things she enjoys.

One of those things is her beautiful knitting.

Bev loves creating small, knitted owls and gifting them to hospitals, clinics and others in the community. Each one is made with care and comes with a special message:
“I’m not lost but all alone. If I make you smile, please take me home!” — Nana Bev

Bev looks forward to continuing to donate her handmade owls through genU, spreading comfort and kindness one owl at a time 🦉

Our Occupational Therapists work alongside people like Bev to support independence, wellbeing and participation in everyday activities that are meaningful to them.

We currently have immediate capacity for both CHSP and NDIS Occupational Therapy referrals: https://www.genu.org.au/services/allied-health-services/
