Looking after your C-section scar is about more than appearance. It's about helping it move, feel and function better too.
A C-section is major abdominal surgery, and your scar continues healing for up to 12 months (and sometimes longer).
Once your incision is fully healed (usually around 6 weeks), you can start supporting your scar by:
✔️ Scar massage
✔️ Gentle mobility and breathing exercises
✔️ Silicone scar tape / cream
✔️ Keeping the tissue well hydrated
Research has shown that silicone scar therapy can help reduce raised scarring, improve scar colour and elasticity, and decrease itching and discomfort. Scar massage can also improve tissue flexibility, reduce tightness and help prevent adhesions that may contribute to abdominal discomfort or restricted movement.
Remember, every scar heals differently. Genetics, skin type and your body's healing response all play a role.
If you've had a C-section and your scar feels tight, sensitive, numb, painful or simply doesn't feel "right," don't just put up with it. A pelvic health physiotherapist can assess your scar and guide you through techniques to improve both comfort and function.
💜 Your scar tells an incredible story, but it doesn't have to limit how you move or feel.
