The Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards are reshaping expectations around food and nutrition across both residential and in-home aged care.

From person-centred meal choices and protected mealtimes to APD involvement in menu planning and annual menu and mealtime assessments, providers are expected to demonstrate not only compliance but also a genuine commitment to resident wellbeing, dignity and quality of life.

Our latest article breaks down each Standard and what they mean in practice for food and nutrition services.

Last week, Nutrition Professionals Australia’s Director, Julie Dundon, participated in two speaking sessions at the Aged Care Catering Summit in Sydney as part of the Restaurant & Foodservice Show.

Julie joined the panel discussion, ‘The Shift to Home Care: Nutrition Frameworks in Action’, alongside John Casey from The Culinary Studio, Tawnya Bahr from Straight To The Source, and Kylie Radburn from Apollo Care Alliance, exploring the challenges of meeting nutrition goals for in-home delivered meals and the changing expectations around food and nutrition in aged care.

Julie also presented alongside Ingrid Roche from the National Allergy Council and Dr Julie Cichero, Foundation Co-Chair of IDDSI (Global), discussing the challenges of providing texture-modified diets that are also allergen-free when required.

As part of the session, Julie shared findings from M-Check - our Menu and Mealtime Assessment tool, highlighting gaps between clinical and food service teams and the importance of stronger collaboration to support safe, person-centred nutrition care.

Thank you to the organisers and fellow panel members for an insightful discussion on the future of food and nutrition in the aged care industry.

2026 marks 50 years of transforming health across Australia. This year’s theme, 'Celebrating Our Collective Impact', shines a spotlight on the power of evidence-based nutrition to change lives.

With more than 100 years of collective experience across our Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) at Nutrition Professionals Australia, we recognise the dedication and impact our team continues to make through menu and mealtime assessments with M-Check.

Developed by NPA and aligned with the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, M-Check is a benchmark tool offering a structured, technology-enabled process that ensures menus and mealtimes are carefully reviewed, assessed, and validated by APDs. The tool streamlines compliance while supporting meaningful improvements in food services and resident wellbeing.

Food and nutrition are central to quality care, but under the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, compliance goes beyond simply having a menu in place.

Providers must be able to demonstrate how food services meet nutritional needs, support choice, and deliver a positive dining experience.

Our latest article explores how Menu and Mealtime Assessments using our M-Check tool help strengthen compliance, provide clear oversight, and drive meaningful improvements across both residential and home care settings.
