Ripple Counselling Melbourne.

Ripple Counselling Melbourne. My hope with this page, is that I can share some valuable information from my studies in counselling and Psychotherapy.

I know therapy can feel overwhelming and intense, which is why I’m here to introduce you to Walk & Talk Therapy, due to its ability to take the pressure out of the therapy hour. I often find myself struck by something that I read or hear, thinking of someone who really needs to hear it. This page is an attempt to make mental health recourses more accessible and digestible. It will also keep me acc

ountable to digest more of what I consume as I read, if I intend to relay it's usefulness back to you, so I thank you for this.

Somewhere along the way, you started believing that your worth was tied to your output.

How much you do.

How much you achieve.

How much you produce.

You internalised the message that if you're not busy, you're not valuable.

That rest is laziness.

That slowing down is failure.

But you are not a machine.

You are a person.

A living, breathing, feeling person.

And your value doesn't drop when you rest.

In fact, rest is where the creature of you gets to come out and play.

The parts of you that aren't performing for anyone.

When was the last time you let yourself do that?

Not earn rest.

Just rest.

Just be.

I had read the personal development books, but by the time I started my degree, I was still experiencing brain fog and panic attacks whenever I was exposed to my triggers.

Personal development is something I highly endorse, along with self-regulation and community.

It's one of the first things I help clients bring online.

But it has its limitations.

Personal development can't point out your blind spots.

Therapy can.

Personal development can't make you feel heard in the way you've been longing for.

Therapy can.

And personal development can't help you titrate those big, scary emotions you've been too afraid to feel.

Therapy can.

Where did that thought come from?

Who's talking when you say you're not good enough?

These are some of my favourite questions to ask in therapy.

Because sometimes we carry thoughts and opinions that don't actually belong to us.

They're not our beliefs, but because we've collected them over time, often subconsciously, we carry them as though they were.

I love the "lightbulb" moment when I ask, "Who's talking?" and my clients realise it's not actually them.

And I love the moment they begin choosing their own values to measure their worth against.

Who were you before the world told you who to be?

I ask my clients this question a lot.

Some have answers.

A memory of a self. A spark.

And some don't.

Because some people never got the chance to find out.

Either way, that self is still in there.

Buried under the noise.

The protection. The survival.

How does that saying go?

The best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago.

The second best time is today.

You get to find those missing parts now.

Or meet them for the very first time.

It might feel scary to do that later in life.

But there's nothing more badass than a grandma who discovers she loves dancing salsa.

Be that grandma.

Go find your badass hobby.

How can I slow down when stress is my identity?

We all know that one person.

They talk fast, listen only to respond, and take great pride in always being busy.

Maybe it's a friend.

Your mum.

Your sister.

Or maybe it's you.

Many of these people were raised to regard a strong work ethic as one of their highest values.

Let me say that again, so your conscious mind can catch up to what your unconscious is trying to tell you.

A solid work ethic is one of the highest values.

Much of a therapist's work is making the unconscious conscious, so you can decide for yourself how you really feel about things like relaxing.

Grief is coming, whether you like it or not.

It's going to hurt like hell.

And you're going to feel like you won't make it out alive.

But you will.

The only choice you have is whether you run from it, becoming completely out of breath before it even reaches you...

Or you can watch the wave approach, so that you can take a final breath before it buries you.

Don't distract yourself.

Don't try to fix it.

Just let it come.

Let it break over you.

Because the only way out of grief is through it.

And I promise you, the other side exists, even if you can't see it from here.

I used to think I'd escaped death anxiety.

Mum gave me a rich exposure to it as a child. She never shielded me and was always open about it.

So I held myself above the crowd and thought I'd escaped this universal terror.

Until I read Staring at the Sun by Irvin D. Yalom.

In it, he talks about two kinds of death anxiety:
• The overt kind - death dreams, death fantasies.
• The covert kind - the hidden kind. The kind we displace onto other things.

I recognised myself immediately.

Every Thursday, my day off, I stress that I'm not relaxing hard enough.

Things get derailed, and I spiral.

Covert death anxiety disguises my extreme attempts to make the most of every day.

I agree with Yalom that embracing our mortality is one of the most powerful tools we have to enrich our lives.

I recently found this bottle of Rescue Remedy in a backpack lost to the back of a cupboard, and suddenly the memories of needing it came flooding back.

I haven't thought about or used this product in years, and yet I used to keep a bottle of it on me at all times.

It's so easy to forget when change and growth happen so gradually.

But it's moments like this that remind me that the work I do makes a real difference.

If you're curious to find out what a difference therapy could make for you, reach out.

If you want to be in therapy but can't, for whatever reason, then listen up.

This is my advice to you.

It's something I recommend to almost everyone.

Something you can implement right now.

Something that, if properly implemented, could change the course of your life.

You've probably heard it before, but you were too busy to listen.

Or you disregarded it as being wishy-washy.

Are you listening this time?

Slow down.

You're never going to heal if you're moving so fast you can barely breathe.

Chronic busyness is a choice.

An unhealthy coping strategy that robs you of your ability to notice dewdrops on oat shoots.

If you're seeing this, you probably think that I use Insta.

You probably think I call it Insta.

I don't.

I call it Instagram.

And I believe that the current business model governing our social media is destroying our ability to connect in the real world.

And the sad thing is, I don't even mean with other people.

How are we supposed to untangle the complexity of our psyche when we fill every still and quiet moment with the next 30-second reel?

And here it comes now.
