Learn to crawl with physio Soraya!
Crawling is more than just a milestone it’s an important stage of development that helps babies build the foundations for future movement and learning. 🧡

Crawling can help develop:
✨ Strength through the shoulders, arms, core and even pelvic floor!
✨ Balance and coordination
✨ Hand function and weight-bearing through the hands
✨ Communication between both sides of the body (bilateral coordination)
✨ Spatial awareness, problem-solving and confidence to explore their environment

Every baby learns at their own pace, and sometimes a few simple changes to the environment or the right play ideas can help encourage crawling in a fun and natural way.

In this video, our physio shares some practical tips you can try at home to support your little one’s crawling journey.

If you have any concerns about your baby’s motor development, our team is always happy to help.

🧡 June is Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month 🧡

Did you know that developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) affects approximately 1–2% of babies and is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions seen in infancy?

DDH occurs when the hip joint does not develop properly, ranging from mild instability to complete dislocation. Early identification is important, as treatment is often simpler and more effective when started in the first few months of life.

Signs that may warrant further assessment include:
• A family history of hip dysplasia
• Breech presentation during pregnancy
• Reduced movement or asymmetry between the legs
• Uneven thigh or buttock creases
• A clicking or unstable hip identified by a health professional

While not all babies with DDH show obvious signs, routine newborn and maternal child health checks play an important role in early detection.

If you have concerns about your baby’s movement, development or hip health, speak with your GP, paediatrician or physiotherapist.

Early assessment can make a big difference. 💙

🚲 Bike Skills Group – Expressions of Interest Now Open!

Learning to ride a bike is more than just a childhood milestone - it builds confidence, independence, coordination, strength, and participation in the community.

We are launching a kids physiotherapist-led Bike Skills Group for children who would benefit from support with balance, coordination, confidence, and learning to ride.

This group may be suitable for children with developmental delays, autism, ADHD, DCD, low muscle tone, physical disabilities, or any child who needs a little extra support to get rolling.

🌟 Fun, supportive and goal-focused

May is EDS & Hypermobility Awareness Month 🦓
Hypermobility is so much more than simply being “flexible.” It can impact strength, fatigue, coordination, pain, motor development, endurance, body awareness, and participation in everyday activities.

For many children and adults, these challenges are often misunderstood or overlooked. Early support, education, and the right strategies can make a huge difference in function, confidence, and quality of life 🧡

At Ohana Physiotherapy, we love supporting clients with hypermobility across the lifespan through individualised, functional, and family-centred care. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

Why does early intervention matter? 🌱
Early childhood is a critical period of brain development, neuroplasticity, movement learning, communication, and skill development.
The earlier a child receives the right support, the greater the opportunity to positively influence long-term function, participation, independence, and quality of life.
If concerns are present, early support matters — don’t wait and see 🧡

Understanding cerebral palsy goes far beyond movement alone 🧡

Physiotherapy can support people with cerebral palsy to build strength, coordination, balance, mobility and confidence in ways that are meaningful to them and their family. Every journey looks different, and therapy should be tailored to their unique goals, challenges and abilities.

From play-based therapy and gross motor development to equipment support, participation goals and everyday independence - physiotherapy is about helping children do more of what they love ✨

A recent umbrella review evaluated evidence-based interventions for children with developmental central hypotonia, including those with Down syndrome. Motor, sensorimotor, orthotics, positioning, mobility, and infant massage interventions are supported by positive but low- or very-low-quality evidence.

Using a retrospective case report format, these interventions are described, and their proposed mechanism of action is examined through the F-words lens tool and from the perspective of the parent. Tummy time, compression garments, early supported sitting for grasp and reach, ON-Time use of a supported stepping device, and orthotics are all used in the context of coaching in natural environments and family-centred care.
