Baby mastered pulling to stand… now what? 👀

Don’t just practise standing — encourage them to move sideways too!

✨ Place favourite toys slightly to the left + right
✨ Let them shift their weight and reach
✨ Gradually spread the toys further apart to encourage those sideways steps

Cruising along furniture helps babies practise weight shifting, balance and stepping as they work towards independent walking 👣

No need to rush it — just create opportunities to explore movement through play 🤍

Save this for when your baby starts pulling to stand!

Hydrotherapy can be a fun and motivating way for children to work towards their physiotherapy goals — using the warmth and support of the water to encourage movement, strength, confidence and independence.

At Ohana Physiotherapy, our paediatric physios tailor hydrotherapy sessions to your child, their abilities and their goals.

So your baby has mastered crawling… now what? 👀

Time to make it a little harder!

Physio Tip #2: Add obstacles 🧡

Once crawling on a flat surface is looking easy, try adding cushions, pillows or soft obstacles to crawl over, around and between.

This helps challenge:
✨ Strength & stability
✨ Balance and coordination
✨ Motor planning
✨ Weight shifting
✨ Confidence navigating different surfaces

The best part? You don’t need fancy equipment — couch cushions, pillows and things you already have at home work perfectly.

Mastered the skill? Change the environment and create a new challenge!

Save this one to try at home 👶🏼

Paediatric therapist green flags 💚

The things we’d look for in a therapist for our own child = the standards we hold ourselves to at Ohana.

Because qualifications matter, but so does how your child and family feel supported along the way 🫶

Ball skills are about so much more than sport. ⚽
✨Thanks physio Hamish for a recent inservice and blog✨

Every throw, catch and kick asks your child’s vision, balance, coordination, body awareness and thinking skills to work together.

These skills can help children feel more confident joining playground games, trying new activities and staying active.

If ball games feel difficult, the answer isn’t always “more practice”.

Try creating success by using:
🟠 A larger, softer ball
🟠 A shorter distance
🟠 Slower, more predictable throws
🟠 Fewer distractions
🟠 Sitting before progressing to standing

Some children may need support with underlying skills such as visual tracking, timing, balance, force control or motor planning.

If your child avoids ball games, becomes fearful or frustrated, or regularly misses out on sport and group play, a paediatric physiotherapy assessment can help identify what’s making the activity difficult and provide practical strategies matched to their abilities.

Does your baby always seem to look to the same side? 👀

A consistent head-turning preference can sometimes be linked with torticollis and may contribute to plagiocephaly (a flat spot on the head).

A few things we look at as paediatric physios:
✨ Does baby comfortably turn their head both ways?
✨ Do they tend to sleep or play facing the same direction?
✨ Is there a noticeable flat spot or change in head shape?
✨ Do they dislike tummy time or seem less comfortable turning one way?

The good news? There are lots of simple ways to support movement variety, positioning and development and getting advice early can make things much easier.

If you’re noticing a strong preference or changes in your baby’s head shape, it’s worth having it assessed rather than simply waiting to see if it resolves.

“I’ll just push through it.”

Sometimes soreness settles with time. But when pain keeps returning, affects sleep, stops you from exercising or makes everyday movement harder, it may be worth asking why.

Seeing a physiotherapist does not automatically mean scans, lengthy treatment or stopping everything you enjoy.

Sometimes you simply need reassurance and a clear plan. Other times, addressing the problem early can help you rebuild strength, move with confidence and prevent symptoms from continuing to interfere with your life.

Pain is not always a sign of serious damage… but it is information worth understanding.

If something does not feel right, you do not need to wait until it becomes severe before asking for guidance.
