It’s not just our clinical team that creates the Haven difference. It’s the passion and compassion of our beautiful administrative team that turns bricks and mortar, and multiple locations, into one Haven heart.

Cassie will happily tell you she works alongside some of the best sonographers, obstetricians, gynaecologists and MFM specialists around.

But we’ll happily tell you that Cassie is an incredible asset to our team, always putting the women in our care, and how they’re feeling — first.

Expertise matters enormously. But so does knowing how to read a room. When to make someone smile. When to simply listen. And when a moment and a patient deserves every ounce of your compassion and undivided attention.

Just one of the extraordinary pieces of ultrasound technology we use at Haven; and what she allows our specialists and sonographers to see is remarkable.

❤️ Blood flow through your baby’s heart and vessels.

Not simply whether a heart is beating. Doppler ultrasound can help us assess blood-flow patterns and direction through the developing heart and circulation.

🧠 Structures within your baby’s developing brain.

Long before you’ve held your baby for the first time, we can examine remarkably detailed fetal anatomy inside that tiny head.

🦴 The developing spine and skeleton.

And 3D ultrasound isn’t just for those beautiful little faces. Volume imaging can allow us to examine anatomy from different perspectives.

🩸 Even low-velocity blood flow in very small vessels.

Advanced Doppler technology can reveal incredibly fine vascular detail.

❤️ A tiny fetal heart from multiple views.
Its chambers. Its connections. Its blood flow. All while that little heart is beating away inside you.

And yes…

👶🏼 We also get to see the good stuff.

A pout.
A yawn.
A little hand beside a cheek.
Tiny feet kicking away.

But perhaps the most important thing this machine can do?

Give an experienced set of human eyes more information to work with.

Because this machine can produce extraordinary images. It takes extraordinary expertise to know what they mean.

Knowing where to look.
Knowing what you’re looking at.
And knowing when something deserves a closer look.

YES, those wispy little spikes you can see on this ultrasound are baby’s hair! And occasionally, we see quite the hairdo at Haven 😎😍

By the time those tiny locks become visible on ultrasound, baby’s hair story has already been months in the making…

🎀 First trimester: hair follicle development begins
🎀 Second trimester: hair development continues
🎀 From around 24 weeks: scalp hair can sometimes be seen on ultrasound
🎀 Later pregnancy: it becomes increasingly likely to be visible

So what does seeing lots of hair mean?

Mostly, that we’ve been lucky enough to get a gorgeous glimpse of it!

While it’s tempting to start predicting baby’s first hairstyle, ultrasound isn’t used to predict how much hair your baby will have at birth.

Likewise, being born with lots or very little hair doesn’t tell us what your child’s hair will ultimately be like. Hair continues to cycle and change after birth.

Of course, we’re not performing your medical ultrasound to check out baby’s ’do. 😉

We’re concentrating on the all the very important things — baby’s anatomy, growth and wellbeing.

But those wispy little locks? 🥹 We find them ridiculously cute. 🤍

These are not silly questions. They’re frightened questions…

❤️‍🩹 My baby is measuring behind. Should I be worried?
❤️‍🩹 They couldn’t get all the pictures. Does that mean something is wrong?
❤️‍🩹 Why have I been asked to come back?
❤️‍🩹 Is my baby’s heartbeat normal?
❤️‍🩹 What does this percentile mean?
❤️‍🩹 Why did another sonographer come into the room?
❤️‍🩹 Do sonographers go quiet when something’s wrong?
❤️‍🩹 My report says ______. What does that mean?

Spend enough time looking at what pregnant women are searching and asking online, and you begin to see a pattern.

Women trying to interpret measurements they don’t understand. Analysing what was said, and what wasn’t.

Wondering whether a facial expression or a moment of silence meant something more.

Comparing their baby’s measurements with strangers’ babies online.

Trying to work out whether being asked to return means something is wrong.

And sometimes doing all of this after they’ve just had an ultrasound.

This upsets us, and it’s exactly why we built Haven differently!

Obstetric ultrasound isn’t only about obtaining images and measurements. It’s also about making sure you understand what is happening.

You should feel comfortable asking questions; understand what is being examined and why; and have unfamiliar measurements and terminology explained to you.

If another look or follow-up scan is needed, you should understand why.

If something unexpected is found, you deserve clear, compassionate communication about what is known, what isn’t yet known, and what happens next.

Good communication doesn’t mean promising certainty when there isn’t any. It means making sure you understand where things stand in that moment.

We never want Google or a pregnancy forum to be the place you have to go to decipher what just happened in our ultrasound room.

If you’re leaving your scans with more questions than understanding, never be afraid to seek a second opinion. 🤍

Normally, a baby’s bowel appears darker than bone on ultrasound. But sometimes, particularly during the second trimester, the bowel appears unusually bright, ‘as bright as bone.’

This is called echogenic bowel.

‼️ Importantly, echogenic bowel is an ultrasound finding, not a diagnosis. It can be an isolated finding, and many babies with echogenic bowel will have a normal outcome.

However, it has recognised associations with chromosomal abnormalities including trisomy 21, cystic fibrosis, congenital infection (particularly CMV), intra-amniotic bleeding/swallowed blood, some gastrointestinal conditions, and fetal growth restriction.

What it means for an individual pregnancy depends on the whole clinical picture, including previous screening and other findings on ultrasound.

What we prioritise at Haven? Sonographers with the expertise and skill to recognise subtle findings and know when they matter.

The guidelines have changed. Has ultrasound caught up?

RANZCOG now recommends transvaginal ultrasound as a first-line investigation for people with symptoms suggestive of endometriosis.

But finding endometriosis on ultrasound requires specialist expertise.

It takes specific training and experience to systematically search for signs of deep endometriosis and recognise disease involving areas such as the bowel, uterosacral ligaments, bladder, ureters and pouch of Douglas.

And as ultrasound takes a greater role in endometriosis investigation, sonographer training needs to keep pace.

Recent ABC reporting highlighted this very issue, including calls for greater investment in training and the development of minimum standards for endometriosis ultrasound and reporting.

At Haven, we have already invested heavily in this expertise. Our deep endometriosis ultrasounds are performed by sonographers with additional specialist training, using a dedicated examination designed to systematically assess for deep disease, with specialist medical expertise watching on.

Greater access to ultrasound is only part of the answer. We also need greater access to the skills required to find what may be there. 💛

It’s also important to acknowledge even expert ultrasound cannot identify every form of endometriosis. A normal scan does not exclude the disease, particularly superficial endometriosis, and further clinical assessment, and sometimes laparoscopy may still be appropriate.
