Kacia Julius was paralysed from the chest down less than a year ago. Now she’s microdosing psilocybin and posting extraordinary videos of her legs shaking, bouncing and muscles firing.
She believes psilocybin is playing a role in her recovery. And while her story is NOT proof that mushrooms can reverse paralysis, there is some fascinating science behind the idea.
Psilocybin can promote neuroplasticity, encouraging neurons to form new connections and increasing signalling linked to growth and repair. Researchers have also documented unusual muscle spasms, tremors and autonomic responses when people with spinal cord injuries take psychedelics.
Could psychedelics help the nervous system reorganise damaged pathways when combined with intensive rehabilitation and movement practice?
Right now, we simply don’t know. There are no clinical trials showing psilocybin can restore walking after spinal cord injury.
But Kacia is documenting her experiment publicly and her progress raises a question researchers may eventually want to investigate properly.
Her story is unfolding in real time.
