Getting Started With Respite Support

If you're exploring respite support for the first time, it can be hard to know where to begin.
There's often a lot to think through, what supports are available, whether funding covers it, what the participant actually needs, and how to get the process moving without it becoming overwhelming.

Our team work closely with participants, families, carers, and support coordinators to guide each step of the process, from the first enquiry through to preparing for the stay itself.

Before any stay is confirmed, we take the time to understand the participant's routines, interests, communication preferences, support requirements, and preferred dates. That way, by the time they arrive, the team already knows them.

Who their key contacts are, how they prefer to communicate, what their routines look like, and what the support team needs to know to get it right from day one.

We work closely with participants, their support networks, and relevant contacts to make sure nothing important gets missed β€” before, during, or after a stay.

We're a small team, and we mean that genuinely. We're not supporting participants in the thousands. That's a conscious decision, because it means we can actually get to know the people we support on a deeper level.

From your very first enquiry, you have one dedicated point of contact who is across every detail of your experience. No being passed around, no repeating yourself, no starting over with someone new. Just consistent, familiar people who understand your situation and care about getting it right.

From 1 July 2026, mandatory NDIS registration for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers comes into effect. If you or someone you support currently receives SIL, or is exploring it as an option, it is important to understand what this change means.

Under the new requirements, all providers delivering SIL supports must hold registration with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. For participants already receiving SIL from an unregistered provider, supports can continue uninterrupted provided that provider is actively transitioning to registration.

Visionary Respite & Care is currently undertaking the registration process. We are committed to ensuring this transition has no impact on the continuity or quality of support for the participants and families we work with.

A question we get asked often is what does a respite stay actually look like day to day?

At Visionary, every stay is tailored around the individual. Their interests, their goals, their support needs, and the kind of environment that helps them feel comfortable and settled.

For some participants, that means getting into the kitchen and cooking meals they enjoy. For others, it's getting out into the community, visiting a local museum, exploring a market, or taking part in activities that are meaningful to them.

We also focus on the things that matter in the longer term. Building confidence with everyday skills, maintaining routines, and ensuring each participant feels genuinely supported throughout their stay, not just accommodated.

Every detail is considered. From the activities planned to the staff supporting them, nothing is left to chance.

Something a lot of people don't realise about STR, you can access up to 28 days of respite per year, with stays of up to 14 days at a time.

That's more flexibility than most people expect.

How you use those days is entirely up to you. Some people spread them across the year in shorter bursts. Others save them for when they need a longer break. There's no single right way to do it.

What matters is that your stay is planned around your goals, your routine, and what actually works for your life.
