‘Anyone Can Walk to Geraldton’
The most challenging bit is taking the first step.
A couple of hours ago I wrote a poem about how alarmed I had become with the state of mind I was currently living with. This didn’t happen overnight, and the progression had been concerning me enough that yesterday I booked an appointment with a counsellor recommended by a good friend of mine.
Today I took that first step in my journey.
Not to shut my brain down, but to understand it. To work with it rather than constantly fighting it.
At 11:30 I sat down for an hour consultation. I’m pretty sure it was about 1 o’clock by the time I got out, but I wasn’t watching my watch. Time passed.
I feel fortunate to have found a soul who is willing to listen to my life’s tribulations, communicate with me on a human-to-human basis, and help me map out my journey.
My expectations before meeting were optimistic without being unrealistic. I know that managing this spicy little brain of mine isn’t going to happen by sitting on a couch for an hour and spilling the beans.
That said, my experience well and truly outweighed my expectations.
I walked away feeling there is a possibility of moving forward with a brain that I might not always agree with, but that I’m willing to work with.
One day after — a reflection
I’m feeling a slightly better sense of self-esteem.
I’ve definitely still got my mind bouncing around all over the place and preventing me from doing tasks without interruptions. The usual ADHD stuff.
But with the benefit of a little reflection, I think maybe what became really obvious from that meeting was something much simpler.
Emotionally, one of the things I’m lacking at the moment is people listening.
Even though it was a paid environment, I felt validated by having the chance to talk, to be listened to, to be asked relevant questions, and to be encouraged to actually think about my answers.
Maybe, for now, that in itself was a pretty important first step.
