Yep they're a handful, as is the hubby ;) My essential oils journey really started Christmas before last when my hubby (guided by my MIL) gave me for Christmas a diffuser and a couple of gorgeous smelling essential oils 'Wild Orange, Lemongrass & Lavender'. I'll be honest I initially was not overly enthused, thinking what is this (especially given he got an iPad, lol), but it didn't take long to
realise just how fabulous my gift truly was. The great thing was it wasn't just a gift for me, it was a gift for our whole family. Diffusing oils each day really did have a positive effect on all those that entered our home. Well the oils quickly grew from those initial 3 (replaced several times over). Plus I've learnt the true value of these awesome oils and that the applications far extend diffusion. With such pure oils you have the ability for topical application but some can also be ingested. Join me on my EO journey. There are some important guidelines to be aware of with essential oils, key things are as follows:
- Some oils are photosensitive (primarily citrus oils) so you should wait a minimum of 6 hours before exposing skin where you have applied photosensitive oils to UV rays/sunshine.
- Ensure any 'warm oils' for e.g. cinnamon, oregano, thyme, cassia and clove need to be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut oil.
- Never apply oils directly to the eyes, interior of nose or ear canal. So be careful after applying and don't accidently rub your eyelids, handle contact lenses, etc.
- Dilute with carrier oil, NOT water. If you've accidently got essential oil somewhere you didn't intend, use a carrier or vegetable oil to rinse or dilute the area. Using water will increase discomfort.
- Always use a carrier oil with babies, children and those with sensitive skin. Please always take care as those with more sensitive skin as those outlined they are susceptible to irritation, burning or stinging sensations. Bottom of feet (covered by socks), or along the spine are good locations.
- Pregnant & Nursing, though generally popular oils such as lavender, lemon, bergamot.... are considered safe to use during pregnancy, it is always best to ask first or consult your healthcare provider.
- Internal Use. Mose essential oils on the market should NOT be taken internally, however most doTERRA's CPTG oils are labelled as dietary supplements and are safe for internal use, in small quantities. mild oils can be taken under the tongue or in water, hot oils should be placed in capsules. Many oils may be used in cooking recipes for flavouring and/or therapeutic benefit.
- A little goes a long way. Especially with doTERRA oils which are of such high quality, being more potent smaller amounts are required. So less oil, more often, is best.
- Many oils are flammable, so keep clear of open flames, sparks or fire hazards.
