I was intrigued by the ideas of Trofim Lysenko and baffled with his interpretation of what he saw in experiments and also baffled at the stupidity of the people who believed him!
Ignoring basic biology once led to the deaths of tens of millions of people? It all started with a Soviet agronomist named Trofim Lysenko.
In the 1930s, Lysenko convinced Joseph Stalin that standard genetics were a "capitalist plot." He completely rejected natural selection, claiming instead that plants could be "trained" to survive anything just by changing their environment.

His wild, forced policies included:
❄️ **Freezing seeds** to "teach" them to love the cold.
🌾 **"Cooperative" planting**, where crops were packed dangerously close together because he believed plants of the same species would help each other rather than compete for sunlight and water.
🚫 **Banning real science**, leading to the imprisonment or ex*****on of over 3,000 brilliant biologists who dared to disagree with him.
The result in the USSR? Massive crop failures. But the tragedy didn't stop there.
In the late 1950s, Mao Zedong exported Lysenko’s theories to China for the "Great Leap Forward." 🇨🇳

Experienced peasant farmers were forced by the government to:
🚜 **Plow fields up to 2 meters deep**, which buried the good topsoil and brought useless rock and clay to the surface.
🌱 **Plant millions of seeds per acre**, which caused the crops to suffocate, rot, and die almost immediately.
Combine this with the mass killing of sparrows (which allowed crop-eating locusts to multiply uncontrollably), and the result was an absolute ecological collapse.

To avoid being punished, local officials lied to Beijing about having record-breaking harvests. Believing there was a massive surplus, the central government exported the grain and took what little food was left in the countryside.

The tragic outcome was the Great Chinese Famine (1958–1962). An estimated 15 to 45 million people starved to death, making it the deadliest famine in human history.

A grim historical reminder of exactly what happens when political ideology overrides actual scientific truth. 📜🔬

If you wondering about bird flu vaccines: Several new vaccines are in active, rapid development to combat the currently circulating highly pathogenic H5N1 strains (specifically clade 2.3.4.4b). Because this strain has shown unprecedented interspecies transfer—most notably the spillover into dairy cattle in early 2024—development is happening concurrently across both veterinary and human applications.
Veterinary & Agricultural Developments
The recent transmission to livestock has accelerated the need for multispecies biosecurity solutions, moving beyond just poultry.
* Cattle: Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently developed a vaccine platform specifically targeting multiple H5N1 strains in livestock. Published in NPJ Vaccines, the approach uses a dual-route delivery: an intramuscular injection to prevent systemic spread within the animal, combined with an intranasal mucosal administration to block animal-to-animal transmission. In preclinical trials, this provided complete protection against severe disease in dairy calves.
* Poultry (Australia): To strengthen domestic biosecurity, researchers at the University of Queensland (led by Professor Linda Lua) are developing a novel "capsomere" vaccine. Instead of using live or inactivated virus, they engineered a non-infectious, donut-shaped protein ring that displays the H5 haemagglutinin, successfully training the avian immune system to recognize and fight the real virus.
* Poultry (US): The USDA recently granted a conditional license to Zoetis for an updated poultry vaccine targeting current H5 outbreak strains, supported by $100 million in planned investments for poultry vaccine innovations.
Human Vaccine Trials
While the risk of human-to-human transmission remains low, proactive pandemic preparedness trials are well underway, heavily leveraging mRNA technology.
* mRNA Platforms: Moderna is currently running a massive Phase 3 clinical trial across the UK and the US for mRNA-1018, a candidate explicitly designed to target the pandemic A(H5) strain. Concurrently, Arcturus Therapeutics has initiated trials for a self-amplifying mRNA vaccine, which contains proteins that help replicate the viral mRNA inside the body, potentially reducing the required dose.
* Existing Stockpiles as a Stopgap: The US and Europe hold stockpiles of H5N1 vaccines licensed between 2007 and 2020. While these target older clades, recent studies show they still generate cross-neutralizing antibodies against the dominant 2.3.4.4b strain, yielding seroconversion rates of 60% to 95%. In a crisis, these could serve as a first-line defense while updated mRNA vaccines are scaled up.

Reduced Calcium Absorption in horses and ponies with Cushings Disease

By Dr. John Kohnke BVSc RDA

In aged horses and ponies with PPID Cushings Disease, there is concerning problem related to reduced calcium absorption and higher excretion losses caused by the side-effects of the PPID hormone changes. This secondary effect on calcium absorption in horses grazing 24/7 on high oxalate pastures, including highly hazardous kikuyu, buffel grass and setaria spp grasses, have an increased risk of developing Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism or NSH with symptoms of shifting lameness, loss of bone weight bearing strength and ‘Big Head’ due to severe calcium binding by oxalates.

The reduced calcium absorption is also linked to Cushing’s Disease, which results in the small intestine of a PPID affected and an aged horse or pony over 16 years of age, having a lowered ability to absorb calcium from the feed or supplements.

The hormone changes associated with PPID have an effect of reducing the absorption of many nutrients, including the vital bone-maintaining calcium from the small intestine. Studies have shown that the increased ACTH hormone blood levels released in PPID affected horses and ponies, acts to reduce to overall surface area for calcium absorption resulting from a reduction in the length and cell numbers of lining projections or ‘villi’ and the reduced depth of the folds or ‘crypts’ in the lining.

This is as result of the action of the PPID changes and high levels of ACTH hormone secreted from the pituitary gland due to the benign tumour or cancer development in the pituitary gland of PPID affected horses and ponies.

In a horse, or pony, 80% of the calcium taken in with food or supplemented in an available form, is absorbed primarily from the small intestine. The calcium binding effects of oxalate chemicals in tropical grasses to attach and bond to calcium in the small intestine, limits the amount of free calcium available for absorption.

Although, the calcium-oxalate bond is released during hindgut microbial fermentation of the feed, only 20% of the calcium is absorbed through the lining of the large intestine or hindgut, so it is too late to be absorbed effectively to maintain blood and ‘bone bank’ levels.

Unfortunately, this combined with the higher blood levels of cortisone released by the elevated circulating ACTH hormone, also acts to also reduce the normal small intestine surface area for optimum calcium absorption from the small intestine.

It also increases its rate of excretion from the blood and from bone stores as well, due to higher kidney excretion of calcium.

There is also a loss of 300 mg per litre of sweat as PPID affected horses and ponies often have an elevated body temperature and sweat more, especially with altered thermoregulation function in the body and thicker haircoat which often needs to be clipped so that they can maintain a more comfortable body temperature.

In summary, although a calcium supplement, such as Cal-Extra, provides sufficient calcium which is unable to be bound by oxalates due to its innovative formulation, the lower intestinal absorption and higher excretion rates of calcium in PPID affected horses and ponies may not be adequate at the normal recommended dosage amounts.

An increase of one third more of Cal-Xtra should help to counteract the reduced absorption of the calcium from the small intestine. The absorption of Vitamin D3, vital for the uptake and normal regulation of calcium, in Cal-Extra, is unlikely to be affected by the PPID effects.

It is also recommended that owners include a biscuit of lucerne hay in her diet each kilogram provides 12.5 grams of bioavailable calcium, a good content of natural sunlight activated Vitamin D and 170g per kilogram of good quality protein. Horses over 16 years of age have a reduced ability to absorb calcium and protein, so sun-cured lucerne hay is a good source of both to meet their needs.

Equine Focus
(Ideal for performance horses, competition management, and recovery)

Cellular Energy Meets Hindgut Protection: The Equine Recovery Matrix
Built for the High-Demand Athlete.
Exertional stress in horses doesn't just tire muscles—it triggers sarcolemma breakdown, spikes serum creatine kinase (CK), and stresses the gastrointestinal tract. Our dual-action formula pairs creatine monohydrate with curcumin and whole turmeric inside a functional linseed and chia meal matrix to support performance, tissue repair, and gut integrity.

The Biochemical Advantage:

Rapid ATP Recharging: Creatine buffers muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) stores, protecting muscle cell membranes during explosive effort and reducing post-work tissue damage.

Targeted Anti-Inflammatory Support: Curcumin inhibits the inflammatory pathways that drive stiffness and joint fatigue, while safeguarding mitochondrial function against exercise-induced oxidative stress.

Natural Lymphatic Absorption: The rich alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) lipid profile in full-fat linseed and chia solubilizes the curcumin, enabling direct absorption into the lymphatic system—bypassing first-pass liver degradation.

Hindgut Mucilage Shield: Chia and linseed arabinoxylans form a slow-release hydrogel in the gut. This shields active ingredients from stomach acid and delivers a sustained release of curcumin directly to the cecum and colon, supporting hindgut health and preventing the osmotic upset associated with raw creatine.

The Result: Faster recovery times, protected muscle mass, and sustained hindgut support—100% natural, highly palatably formulated for daily top-dressing.

The Ultimate Metabolic Synergy: Cellular Energy Meets Clinical Protection. Creatine, + Turmeric, + Linseed meal, + Chia Meal

The Science of Recovery, Redefined.
We’ve combined the thermodynamic power of creatine with the foundational anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin to create a dual-action metabolic matrix. This isn’t just a supplement; it is a complete cellular support system designed to protect, repair, and energize tissue at the molecular level.

Whether recovering from acute soft tissue trauma, managing chronic exertion, or supporting peak performance, this formulation targets both the structural integrity of the cell and the oxidative stress that follows high metabolic demand.

How the Synergy Works:

The Energy Buffer: Creatine rapidly recharges cellular ATP, preventing the energy depletion that leads to tissue breakdown and cell membrane damage during physical stress.
The Inflammatory Shield: Curcumin steps in to neutralize the secondary damage. By activating the body’s endogenous antioxidant pathways (like glutathione) and blocking inflammatory cascades, it protects mitochondrial function and limits post-exertion swelling.

The Breakthrough: A Whole-Food Delivery System
Curcumin is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb. Instead of relying on synthetic carriers, we’ve engineered a natural, highly bioavailable delivery system using full-fat linseed and chia meals.

Lymphatic Bypass: The natural Omega-3 lipids in the linseed meal bind to the curcumin, bypassing destruction in the liver and delivering the active compounds directly into the lymphatic system for maximum systemic absorption.
Gastric Shielding & Sustained Release: As the mucilage in the linseed and chia hydrates, it forms a protective natural hydrogel. This coats the active ingredients, shielding them from harsh stomach acids while preventing the osmotic shock often associated with raw creatine.
Hindgut Health: For herbivores, this complex matrix resists early digestion, delivering a sustained release of anti-inflammatory curcumin directly to the hindgut to support a healthy microbiome.

The Result?
Maximum bioavailability. No synthetic binders. Just clinically effective, veterinary-grade tissue support delivered exactly where the body needs it most.
