For Brain Injury Awareness Week, let's look beyond what we can see. 🧠

If someone has an acquired brain injury, you might not notice anything different just by looking at them.

But behind the scenes, they may be managing:

🧠 Memory & concentration — remembering things, staying focused or making decisions can become harder.
💬 Communication — they may need more time to process information or find the right words.
⚡ Fatigue — everyday activities can take more energy, making regular rest important.
💗 Emotions & behaviour — changes in mood or behaviour can also happen after an ABI (Acquired Brain Injury).

These challenges aren't always visible — and that's why understanding matters.

Support can be as simple as giving someone extra time to respond, keeping their environment safe, allowing regular breaks, and encouraging independence wherever possible.

A brain haemorrhage can happen suddenly, and knowing the warning signs may help you recognise when someone needs urgent medical attention.

Some signs can include:

🧠 A sudden, unusual or very severe headache
🗣️ Trouble speaking or understanding
💪 Sudden weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the body
👁️ Sudden changes in vision
🚶 Difficulty walking, balancing or coordinating movements
😕 Sudden confusion or unusual drowsiness

Not every headache or change means something serious. But when these symptoms appear suddenly or feel very different from normal, don't wait to see if they pass.

Call 000 for emergency medical help.

There are also things we can do for our brain health every day, such as managing blood pressure, not smoking, staying active, eating a balanced diet, and attending regular health checks.

Know the signs. Look after your brain. And if something doesn't feel right, get it checked. 🧠💗
