YOUR BODY DOESN'T KNOW IT'S “JUST AN EMAIL.”

You're sitting safely at your desk.

Then it arrives.
THAT email.

Your jaw tightens.
Your shoulders rise.
Your breathing changes.
Your heart may beat a little faster.
Your mind starts racing.
Nothing physically attacked you.
But your body responded.

That's because stress isn't simply a thought.
Your brain and body continually interpret what's happening around you and adjust accordingly.

The problem isn't having a stress response.
We need it.

The question is what happens when the modern working day delivers one small trigger after another:

Email.
Phone call.
Deadline.
Meeting.
Traffic.
Notification.
Difficult conversation.
Then another email.

The individual event may pass...
but have you?

This week, don't try to fix anything.
Simply become curious.
Notice:

Jaw. Shoulders. Breath. Heart. Thoughts.
They're clues.

Learning to recognise your own stress response is the first step towards learning how to regulate it.

Next week we'll look at what happens when these tiny stressors keep arriving all day long.

If your body has forgotten what genuinely switching off feels like, message me RESET and let's talk about the recovery options available at Flourish.

Wellness Wednesday..... Halfway there. Have you made time for you?

It's Hump Day.

You've made it halfway through another week.
So before you start thinking about everything you still need to get done...

What have you already done for YOU?
Not because you're stressed.
Not because you're exhausted.
Not because something needs fixing.

Simply because you're worth investing in.

Maybe you went for that walk.
Made it to Pilates.
Caught up with a friend.
Cooked yourself something beautiful.
Sat in the sunshine with a coffee.
Booked the massage.
Read a few chapters of your book.

Or perhaps you've had a cracking couple of days, got heaps accomplished and you're simply feeling GOOD.
Celebrate that too!

Wellbeing shouldn't always be about recovering from something.
Sometimes it's about enjoying where you are, acknowledging what you've accomplished and deliberately adding things to your week that make life better.

So here's your Wednesday challenge:
Before this week disappears...
Do one thing purely for YOU.
Something you enjoy.
Something that makes you smile.

Something that puts a little bit back into your physical, mental or emotional bank account.
No guilt.
No justification required.
You've made it halfway.

Celebrate a week well spent - and invest a little of it back into yourself.
Because living better for longer isn't only about adding years to your life.
It's about enjoying the life you're living now.

Stress Has An Off Switch
Meet your Vagus Nerve

Last week we talked about protecting your weekend calm when Monday arrives.

So how does your body actually move from stressed towards calmer?

Meet an important part of the story:
Your vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve travels from the brainstem down through the neck and communicates with areas including
the heart, lungs and digestive system.

It's an important part of the parasympathetic nervous system - the side of our autonomic nervous system
associated with rest, digestion and recovery.
And here's why I want you to understand it.

Your body's calming systems aren't something you should only think about when you're completely overwhelmed.

We can practise creating conditions that support them every day.
One of the simplest tools?
Your breathing.

Try this at your desk today:
Breathe gently in through your nose.
Then allow your exhale to be comfortable, slow and slightly longer than your inhale.

Repeat for a few minutes without forcing the breath.
Notice what happens to your shoulders, jaw and breathing.

That's not about magically eliminating stress.
It's about deliberately giving your body a moment of less stimulation and more recovery.

Small practice.
Repeated regularly.

That's where things become interesting.
Next week we're going to look at why an email can create a very real physical response throughout your body.

It’s only Tuesday... but where did your weekend calm go?

On Friday, we talked about making the most of your weekend - not simply filling the time, but using it to rest, regulate and reconnect with yourself.

Then Monday arrived.

The inbox filled up.
Meetings were scheduled.
Deadlines started calling.
And before you knew it, the calm you created over the weekend had been replaced by tension, shallow breathing and a mind racing three steps ahead.

Your body has begun the stress process all over again.

But managing work stress doesn’t mean eliminating every deadline, email or difficult conversation. It means learning how to interrupt the stress response before it controls your entire week.

Today, pause for just two minutes.

Drop your shoulders.
Unclench your jaw.
Slow your breathing.
Step away from your screen.
Remind your nervous system that pressure does not always mean danger.

Your weekend calm hasn’t disappeared - you simply need to reconnect with it.

Don’t give the working week the calm you worked all weekend to create.

DON'T WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND TO SWITCH OFF.

Friday afternoon arrives.
You've finished work...

But has your brain?

You're still thinking about the email you didn't send.
The conversation you need to have.
Next week's workload.
The jobs waiting for you on Monday.

And while your body has technically started the weekend, your mind is still at work.

So, here's a different way to think about investing in yourself.
Don't wait until you're exhausted to recover.

Before the weekend begins, deliberately create a transition from WORK to YOU.

Take 20 minutes and walk.
Do some gentle movement.
Spend 10 minutes breathing slowly and intentionally.
Meditate.
Sit quietly.
Have a sauna.
Listen to music.

Do whatever helps your body recognise:

Work is finished. Now it's my time.

And there's another reason this transition matters - your nervous system.

After a busy week of deadlines, emails, meetings, decisions and constant stimulation, your body doesn't necessarily switch out of "work mode" simply because it's Friday afternoon.

Slowing your breathing, moving your body, sitting quietly or meditating can help create the conditions for your nervous system to shift towards a calmer, more restorative state.

And that's where the real weekend investment comes in.
Regulate before you recreate.

Instead of spending Saturday trying to come down from Friday, give yourself a head start.

Arrive at your weekend more relaxed, more present and with more capacity to actually enjoy it.

So, before this weekend begins...
Invest in yourself.
Stop thinking WORK.
Start thinking YOU.

Then go and make the absolute most of your weekend.

Helping you live better for longer through movement, recovery and small, consistent actions that improve your quality of life.

Your family needs you.
But they don't need ALL of you.

Mothers are very good at giving.

We give our time.
Our energy.
Our attention.
Our patience.

And often, without even realising it, we give away the little bit that was meant for ourselves.

There are children to organise, meals to prepare, appointments to remember, work deadlines to meet, washing to do, messages to answer - and the constant mental load of making sure everyone else is okay.

But here's something we don't say often enough:
You are not an unlimited resource.

Looking after yourself isn't about taking something away from your family.

It's about investing in the person who does so much for them.
And self-investment doesn't have to mean expensive retreats or hours of spare time you simply don't have.

It can be a walk.
A Pilates class.
Going to bed a little earlier.
Eating a proper meal.
Taking five minutes to breathe.
Saying "no" occasionally.

Or simply giving yourself permission to stop.

You don't invest in yourself because something is wrong with you.
You invest in yourself because your health, your energy and your quality of life are worth protecting.

Your family needs you.
But they don't need every last drop of you.

Leave something in the tank for yourself.
Because when you invest in yourself, you're not taking away from the people you love.

You're investing in the woman who loves them.

It's not selfish.
It's self-investment.

MYTH: #3

"I need energy to move."
TRUTH:

Movement creates energy.

One of the biggest misconceptions about health is believing that energy arrives before action.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

Movement stimulates your body, your brain and your nervous system. It gets your circulation moving, wakes up your muscles and can leave you feeling more alert than when you started.

You don't need to train for an hour.
You don't need to feel motivated.

You simply need to begin.
• A 10-minute walk.
• A gentle stretch.
• A Pilates class.
• A few minutes of mindful movement.

Every small choice is an investment in yourself.
Because here's the truth...

Energy isn't something you wait for.
It's something you create.

So today, instead of waiting until you feel better...
Invest in yourself.

Take a 10-minute walk.
Your future self and today's self will thank you.

Empowering you to invest in yourself - because life's too good to watch from the sidelines.

Helping you live better for longer through movement, recovery and small, consistent actions that improve your quality of life.

MYTH #2

"Anxiety is all in your head."

REALITY:

Have you ever noticed that when you're anxious...
• Your heart races.
• Your breathing becomes shallow.
• Your muscles tighten.
• Your stomach feels unsettled.
• Your mind won't switch off.
• Sleep becomes harder.

That's because anxiety isn't just happening in your mind.
It's happening throughout your entire body.

Your nervous system shifts into survival mode.
Your breathing changes.
Your muscles tighten.
Stress hormones increase.
Digestion slows.

Your body is preparing to protect you, even when there's no immediate physical danger.

If anxiety affects your whole body, supporting your whole body can become an important part of managing anxiety.
Sometimes it starts with your body.

• A gentle walk.
• Gentle Pilates.
• Intentional breathing.
• Time in nature.
• Quality sleep.
• Time to recover.

These aren't "soft" options.
They're practical, evidence-informed ways to help regulate your nervous system and support your overall wellbeing.

You don't have to fight your body.
You can work with it.

Because when your nervous system begins to feel safe...
Your mind often follows.

This Week's Investment
Instead of asking:
"How do I stop feeling anxious?"

Try asking:
"What can I do today to help my nervous system feel safe?"
Small, consistent investments create lasting wellbeing.

Every movement you make is an investment in your quality of life.

Today, you have a choice.
You can move your body...
Or you can postpone investing in it.

Quality of life isn't something you find.
It's something you create.
One movement at a time.

Every walk.
Every stretch.
Every Pilates class.
Every time you choose movement over sitting...
You're making a deposit into your quality of life.

Not because you're chasing a smaller body.
Not because you're trying to "burn off" yesterday's dessert.

But because movement gives you the freedom to live life well.
• To feel energetic.
• To have confidence in your body.
• To keep up with your children.
• To perform at your best at work.
• To say "yes" when opportunities come your way.
• To look after yourself now, instead of waiting until you have to.

That's what movement is really about.
At Flourish, movement isn't about punishment.

It's about possibility.
