Ever wondered why your acupuncturist asks so many questions? 😊

You might come in to see me about headaches, but before long I’m asking about your sleep, digestion, energy, stress, menstrual cycle and all sorts of things that might seem completely unrelated.

There is a reason!

In Chinese medicine, those little details help me piece together a broader picture of what’s going on for you. Two people can both experience headaches, but the patterns behind them may look quite different, which means I may approach their treatments differently too.

It’s one of the things that makes Chinese medicine so interesting. I’m not simply thinking headache = these acupuncture points. I’m interested in your particular presentation of headache, and what else has been happening in your health.

So next time I ask you a seemingly random question, there’s usually a little Chinese medicine detective work happening in the background. 😊

I've been thinking lately about how easy it is to normalise not feeling our best.

We tell ourselves we're just tired.

That everyone gets headaches.

That tight shoulders are part of having a desk job.

That poor sleep will sort itself out eventually.

Sometimes that's true.

And sometimes it's also worth wondering whether your body has been carrying more than you've realised, and more than it comfortably can. We push through because we have work to do, people to look after and bills to pay.

We can't always change what's causing the stress, but we can become better at noticing how it's affecting us.

Whether it's acupuncture, getting out into nature, catching up with a good friend, or even just taking ten quiet minutes to yourself, I hope you can find a small way to look after yourself this week.

What's the first thing your body does when life gets overwhelming?
