🌟 Important Update for Queenslanders: GPs to Diagnose & Treat ADHD from 1 December 🌟

A significant change is coming for Queenslanders seeking assessment and support for ADHD.

From 1 December, specialist-trained Queensland GPs will be able to diagnose ADHD in adults and prescribe medication. Until now, prescribing was limited to patients aged 4–18, creating long waitlists and considerable pressure on families, especially in rural and regional areas.

This reform is expected to:

✅ Reduce wait times
✅ Ease financial and travel burdens
✅ Improve access for rural communities
✅ Provide earlier intervention and more consistent care

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker practising in rural Queensland, I welcome any initiative that brings care closer to home. Many individuals and families in our region have faced significant delays accessing specialist services, making assessment and treatment both stressful and costly. Allowing appropriately trained GPs to diagnose and prescribe is a practical, confidence-building step that acknowledges the skill already present in primary care.

For Queenslanders, particularly those outside major cities, this change represents meaningful progress.

Rural Sky provides compassionate mental health support & therapy services for individuals. couples, families, & workplaces across the Goondiwindi region.

🌏💚 World Mental Health Day 2025 💚🎶

Today, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day — a day to start conversations, reduce stigma, reach out for support, and connect with your community.

This year’s theme, “Connect with Your Community,” couldn’t feel more relevant after the incredible Gundy Pub Choir earlier this month, where 450+ people from Goondiwindi, Talwood, Dalby, Rockhampton, Texas, Armidale and beyond came together for one magical night of singing and laughter. 🎤💫

There was something truly special about hundreds of voices joining in [almost] harmony — strangers becoming friends, hearts lifting, and the whole room buzzing with belonging. Research tells us that community singing lowers stress, boosts mood, and helps us feel connected — and everyone who was there could feel that truth.

Connection, today and every day, is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to care for your mental health and the wellbeing of those around you. 💛

So whether it’s joining a choir, going for a walk with a friend, chatting with a neighbour, or simply checking in with someone — every moment of connection matters.

From Rural Sky, here’s to staying connected, supporting one another, and finding joy in the little things that bring us together. 💚

🎶 The Body Keeps the Score 🎶

Paul Kelly’s new song takes its name from one of the most powerful trauma books ever written — The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk.

At Rural Sky, we see this truth every day: trauma isn’t just a memory — it’s carried in the body. It shows up in how we breathe, how we flinch, how we feel (or can’t feel).

In our therapy work, we help people gently reconnect to their body’s signals, regulate their nervous system, and make sense of what the body remembers — especially when words aren’t enough.

If this theme resonates with you, take a moment to listen to Paul Kelly’s haunting new track 👇

🌾 R U OK? Day – Goondiwindi & Our Rural Communities 🌾

Today is R U OK? Day—a reminder to pause, check in, and start conversations that could change, or even save, a life. Su***de touches too many rural families, and the challenges of isolation, stigma, and tough times can make it harder to speak up.

We often hear the statistic that men don’t seek help for their mental health. But here on the ground at Rural Sky, I’m so encouraged to share a different story. More and more men are walking through the door—sometimes whole days are filled with only men seeking support.

These men are not only taking steps to care for themselves, but they’re also changing the culture of our community. By talking openly about their mental health, they are breaking down stigma and opening conversations with their mates, families, and colleagues.

💬 So today, and every day, let’s ask the question: “Are you OK?”
And let’s be ready to listen—really listen.

Because when one person speaks up, it gives others permission to do the same. And together, we build a stronger, safer, and more connected community. 💛
