Let’s talk about a big lymphatic drainage myth… 🤫
If you’ve ever looked into lymphatic massage, you’ve probably heard this strict "rule": “You absolutely HAVE to start at the collarbone first, or it doesn’t work.”
After 35 years in the business and seeing thousands of bodies, the reality is clear: it's just not the whole story.
The human body isn't a rigid piece of plumbing. While standard textbooks teach everyone to start at the neck (the terminus), science shows there are other areas such as the abdomen (belly) and groin that are incredibly important to address.
Here is how the anatomy actually works for a healthy system:
👉 The Real Engine (Cisterna Chyli): Most of your body's lymphatic fluid routes through a major collection reservoir called the cisterna chyli, which sits deep in your abdomen.
👉 The Inguinal Gateway: The groin holds the inguinal nodes, which act as the main drainage basin for the entire lower body.
👉 The Siphon Effect: When deep tightness and structural tension are cleared out of the belly and groin, it creates a natural pressure gradient. This acts like a siphon, drawing fluid up and out of the lower extremities far more effectively than just working on the neck.
Because the system is fully interconnected, starting on the back with kidney drainage techniques and addressing the abdominal nodes by reaching underneath the body can open up these deep pathways from all sides. Integrating the nodes behind the knee (popliteal nodes) and key neck nodes ensures the entire network is firing efficiently.
Now, I know some people are going to argue with this approach because it goes against traditional textbook sequences. But years of in-clinic results show that this exact method stimulates lymphatic flow incredibly efficiently. Real-world results on real bodies override rigid rules every single time.
(Note: If you are dealing with medical conditions like lymphoedema or lipoedema, the tissue structure isn't functioning normally. These require a very specialised clinical protocol).
True lymphatic health for a typical, healthy system comes from a mix of targeted release and intentional movement to clear out those deep structural roadblocks. Physical movement naturally squeezes the lymph nodes and vessels, which helps pump and move lymphatic fluid efficiently throughout the whole body. The body doesn't care about a rigid textbook sequence—it cares about how pressure gradients actually move fluid through the tissues! 🙌
