💚 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 💚

Recently, one of our long-standing families visited Ngak Min Health, with mum, Valda, bringing her three boys, Ralph, David and Daniel, in for their annual 715 Health Checks.
For this family, regular health checks have become part of their routine over many years. It's a simple but important way to stay on top of their health, track growth and development, and make sure any concerns are identified early.

At Ngak Min Health, we know that healthy families build strong communities. Seeing families return year after year allows us to build trusted relationships and provide ongoing, culturally safe care that supports every stage of life.

The annual 715 Health Check is about more than a check-up. It's an opportunity to focus on prevention, early intervention, and supporting the overall wellbeing of children and young people.

Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is a preventable disease, yet it continues to devastate remote Indigenous communities across Australia.

Too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are losing their lives far too young from a disease linked to poverty, overcrowded housing, and inequitable access to healthcare.
This must change.

We need our voices to be heard. We need action, investment, and commitment to address the root causes of RHD and ensure every child, family, and community has the opportunity to live a healthy life.

Supporting healthy futures starts with prevention and early intervention 💙💚

Students boarding at Djarragun College, Elson, Jahleel, Kassarn, Ishaley, and Cyrus, recently completed their annual 715 Health Check with Ngak Min Health as part of their ongoing health and wellbeing journey.

The 715 Health Check is an important opportunity to support the overall wellbeing of children and young people. It helps monitor growth and development, assess physical, social and emotional health, and identify any concerns early so the right support can be provided when it's needed.

These health checks also give young people the chance to build positive relationships with health professionals, ask questions about their health and develop confidence in managing their wellbeing.

By making the 715 Health Check a regular part of our model of care, Ngak Min Health is helping children and young people stay healthy, connected and supported as they grow.

Sore throats or skin sores might seem minor, but if left untreated, they can sometimes lead to Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), a serious condition that can cause permanent damage to the heart.

RHD continues to impact many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families across Australia. The good news is that early treatment of sore throats and skin infections can help prevent it.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💙

In some very exciting news for our students and their families, we have moved into a new dedicated premises at 27 Norman Street, Gordonvale 🌿

While the service continues to focus on the students and families from Djarragun College and Cape York Girl Academy, the move creates a professional, culturally safe healthcare space that offers greater privacy and comfort for students and families accessing care.

The new central location also gives the service room to strengthen partnerships with visiting health professionals, allied health providers and community organisations, and explore future opportunities.

A big thank you to our nurse Jayrahni, who recently visited Cape York Partnership to provide free flu vaccinations. It was great to see so many people taking a positive step to protect themselves, their families and the wider community.

Xavier’s journey started like many others at boarding school, but something wasn’t quite right. After each school holiday, he kept coming back unwell.

Through regular 715 Health Checks at Ngak Min Health, our team noticed the pattern and took a closer look.

That decision led to an early diagnosis of Rheumatic Heart Disease and the care he needed to stay healthy.

Today, Xavier is supported with ongoing treatment and regular check-ups to protect his heart and keep him moving forward 💪

Primary health care nurses are often the first point of contact. They work across general practice, community health, schools, aged care and remote services, supporting prevention, early care and ongoing support close to home.

Today, we want to shine a light on Jayrahni Nicholls, one of our dedicated primary health care nurses here at Ngak Min Health 💙

“The most meaningful part of my role is building strong, respectful relationships based on trust and continuity of care. Taking the time to listen, learn and walk alongside individuals, families and community helps ensure care is truly person centred and culturally safe.” Jayrahni said.

Jayrahni is especially passionate about holistic health models that recognise culture, family, community and connection to Country as essential parts of wellbeing. Supporting people to feel empowered, informed and in control of their health is what makes her work so rewarding.
