For Ngak Min Health nurse Jayrahni Nicholls, rheumatic heart disease is more than a health issue. Its prevention and eradication have become deeply personal.

In Part 4 of her story, Jayrahni shares why she is so determined to keep young people engaged in treatment, why trust and understanding matter and her ultimate hope for the future:

โ€œTotal eradication. That is it. That is all I want.โ€โค๏ธ

Trust cannot be rushed. You are not going to get it overnight, and you should not expect to๐Ÿ’™

For nurse Jayrahni Nicholls, some of the most important lessons in healthcare were learned through watching, listening and doing.

At a Cairns clinic, Aboriginal Health Worker Aunty Desley would show Jayrahni something once, then step back and give her the opportunity to try. From her dad, she learned another kind of lesson: how to move through a room with ease, connect naturally and make people feel comfortable.๐Ÿฉบ

Today, working in primary health care, Jayrahni carries those lessons with her. She talks about reading a room before a word is spoken, adapting the way she communicates to the person in front of her and why something as simple as photos of her own kids on the clinic wall can help build connection. ๐Ÿค

Because good care is not only about clinical knowledge. It is also about relationships, communication and taking the time to build trust. ๐Ÿ’™

Sometimes a career path starts with someone who refuses to let a closed door be the end of the story. ๐Ÿ’™

For Jayrahni, that person was her mum. From advocating for a Cairns clinic to give her daughter an opportunity, to challenging university enrolment rules, she kept finding ways forward.

Then came the early Thursday morning drives and hands-on learning alongside Aboriginal Health Worker Aunty Desley. Through those experiences, something began to shift.

Nursing was no longer simply the future Jayrahniโ€™s mum imagined for her. With the guidance of strong role models and the opportunity to experience healthcare firsthand, Jayrahni began to see that future for herself.

This is Part 1 of Jayrahni's story: The Seed.

Our Ngak Min Health team was honoured to walk alongside community, families and organisations at this year's Cairns NAIDOC March, celebrating 50 years of NAIDOC and the incredible strength, resilience and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We marched from the Cairns Performing Arts Centre to Fogarty Park. The morning was filled with pride, connection and a shared commitment to recognising the generations who have paved the way and supporting those who will lead into the future.

Recently, one of our long-standing families visited Ngak Min Health, with mum, Valda, bringing her three boys, Ralph, David and Daniel, in for their annual 715 Health Checks.
For this family, regular health checks have become part of their routine over many years. It's a simple but important way to stay on top of their health, track growth and development, and make sure any concerns are identified early.

At Ngak Min Health, we know that healthy families build strong communities. Seeing families return year after year allows us to build trusted relationships and provide ongoing, culturally safe care that supports every stage of life.

The annual 715 Health Check is about more than a check-up. It's an opportunity to focus on prevention, early intervention, and supporting the overall wellbeing of children and young people.

We're proud to walk alongside families as they grow, thrive, and stay connected to quality healthcare close to home.

Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is a preventable disease, yet it continues to devastate remote Indigenous communities across Australia.

Too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are losing their lives far too young from a disease linked to poverty, overcrowded housing, and inequitable access to healthcare.
This must change.

We need our voices to be heard. We need action, investment, and commitment to address the root causes of RHD and ensure every child, family, and community has the opportunity to live a healthy life.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch the video and learn more about the impact of RHD and why urgent action is needed. Visit: rhdaustralia.org.au/resources/

Together, we can raise awareness, demand change, and work towards ending RHD for future generations.

Supporting healthy futures starts with prevention and early intervention ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

Students boarding at Djarragun College, Elson, Jahleel, Kassarn, Ishaley, and Cyrus, recently completed their annual 715 Health Check with Ngak Min Health as part of their ongoing health and wellbeing journey.

The 715 Health Check is an important opportunity to support the overall wellbeing of children and young people. It helps monitor growth and development, assess physical, social and emotional health, and identify any concerns early so the right support can be provided when it's needed.

These health checks also give young people the chance to build positive relationships with health professionals, ask questions about their health and develop confidence in managing their wellbeing.

By making the 715 Health Check a regular part of our model of care, Ngak Min Health is helping children and young people stay healthy, connected and supported as they grow.
Healthy futures begin with the steps we take today. ๐Ÿ’™

Sore throats or skin sores might seem minor, but if left untreated, they can sometimes lead to Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), a serious condition that can cause permanent damage to the heart.

RHD continues to impact many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families across Australia. The good news is that early treatment of sore throats and skin infections can help prevent it.

This powerful video shares a personal story of living with RHD and highlights the importance of getting symptoms checked early and staying connected to ongoing care.
