It’s World Nutrition Week! 🥗💚

For bariatric patients, good nutrition is an essential part of achieving and maintaining long-term weight loss. Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but reaching your nutrition goals and building sustainable habits are key to making the most of your surgery.

Prioritising protein, hydration, vitamins, minerals and nutrient-dense foods helps support your health, energy and muscle mass as your body adjusts after surgery.

Regular follow-up is just as important. The first 12 months after bariatric surgery are a critical time to monitor your progress, nutritional intake, weight loss and overall wellbeing. These appointments provide an opportunity to check that you’re meeting your goals, identify nutritional deficiencies early and make adjustments when needed.

Remember, you don’t have to be perfect. Focus on consistency, ask questions and use your healthcare team for support.

Your surgery is the beginning of the journey. Nutrition and regular follow-up help make the results last💪

🚴‍♀️ Looking for a reason to get on your bike?

Why not combine getting active with supporting a fantastic cause? ❤️

The Great Cycle Challenge Australia is happening this October, encouraging people of all ages and fitness levels to get on their bikes and ride to help fight kids’ cancer. You choose your own distance and your own pace — so whether you’re just starting out or already a keen cyclist, there’s a challenge for you!

Two of our favourite local rides are the beautiful bike path around Tuggerah Lake and the ride from Gosford Waterfront to Lions Park at Woy Woy. Both are great ways to get some exercise, enjoy the Central Coast and build up your cycling fitness.

So why not dust off the bike, grab a friend or family member and give it a go? 🚲

There are two main types of weight loss surgery performed in Australia – the gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass.

Both these procedures work well for 70-75% of patients over the long term. They both work in two ways. Firstly, by causing ‘restriction’ - a feeling of fullness and limiting or restricting how much you can eat.

Secondly, they both cause ‘metabolic’ changes – improvements in your metabolism (the way your body processes food and drink) – which will give you health benefits (for example can resolve and prevent diabetes), and help you lose weight.

Most people are eligible for either, but sometimes for different health reasons Dr Hamer may suggest that you have one rather than the other.

We get asked a lot about ‘aftercare’ or the support we provide after weight loss surgery.

The year after your weight loss surgery is an important year as the more clean habits you can develop over this year, the more weight you will lose, but also the more likely you are to keep your weight off in the long term. As this year is so important we ask people to see us at least 3 times in the year after surgery (in person or via telehealth), at each visit you will see Sarah our dietitian, Kristie our nurse and Dr Hamer.

We also provide you with email addresses so that you can ask questions in between your appointments. We have an information booklet that has a lot of information in it and is a great resource.

Thankfully weight loss surgery is relatively low risk procedure, but if you do experience complications we want to be able to resolve them quickly for you. Please contact us if you have any concerns after your surgery - if you are in this small group you will be bulk billed or treated at ‘no gaps’, complications can be treated by Dr Hamer through the public and private hospital systems.

Hair loss after weight loss surgery? You’re not alone! 💛

Hair loss is a common side effect of weight loss surgery and usually occurs around 3–6 months after surgery, lasting for another 3–6 months. The good news? The hair follicle has not been damaged, your hair will regrow when given the right conditions. 🌱

Supporting healthy hair regrowth means getting enough key nutrients, including:
🥩 Protein
🩸 Iron
💊 Vitamin B12 & biotin
🌰 Zinc
🥑 Healthy fats, such as flaxseed oil & olive oil

Taking a bariatric-specific multivitamin can help ensure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Everyone’s nutritional needs are different. Our dietitian Sarah can help you create an individual plan to support your recovery, nutrition and hair regrowth. 💚

🚨 Sleeve Reset Diet: Quick Fix or Delaying a Long-Term Solution?

The “sleeve reset” is a short-term, restrictive diet that typically returns you to a VLCD or liquids, purées, soft foods and small portions—similar to the early stages after surgery.

It’s often promoted online as a way to “shrink” your sleeve, restore fullness, reset hunger signals, break cravings and restart weight loss. However, there is no good evidence that it physically shrinks your sleeve or provides a lasting reset.

These diets may result in short-term weight loss, largely because they reduce calorie intake. But they rarely address why weight regain occurred—such as non-hungry eating, grazing or frequent high-calorie, low-nutrition foods.

Without identifying the cause and developing strategies to address it, a sleeve reset is unlikely to be a long-term solution.

World Patient Safety Day 🩺

Today is World Patient Safety Day, a global day led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote and encourage practices dedicated to keeping patients safe throughout their healthcare journey.

Patient safety is incredibly important to all of us at the team at Dr Peter Hamer. There is a lot that happens behind the scenes to help ensure you are safe before, during and after your surgery.

From double-checking your details multiple times, to specialised diets before surgery that can help improve safety, every step matters. We use state-of-the-art surgical equipment and technology, alongside carefully designed systems and protocols.

And our commitment doesn’t stop when surgery is over. We have systems in place to ensure you are closely monitored, supported and well cared for throughout your recovery.

Patient safety is everyone’s responsibility — and for our team, it is at the heart of everything we do❤️

Wondering whether snacking is okay after weight loss surgery? The answer isn’t always “no” — it’s about why, when and what you’re eating.

Snacks should be guided by hunger, rather than habit, boredom or simply having food available. If you are genuinely hungry between meals, a small, nutritious snack can be a helpful part of your eating plan.

Aim to choose snacks that contain protein and fibre, which can help you feel satisfied and support your nutritional needs. As a general guide, keep snacks to under 120 calories (500kj).

Remember, everyone’s needs and eating patterns after surgery are different. If you’re unsure what makes a good snack, our dietitian Sarah is always happy to provide ideas and talk through your individual needs.

If you’re hungry between meals, don’t ignore it — let’s make sure your snack is working for you, not against your goals💙

💛 R U OK? Day 💛

Today is a reminder to check in on the people around us — not just the ones who seem to be struggling, but anyone who might be having a difficult time behind the scenes.

Many of us experience challenges with our mental health at some point in our lives. Sometimes we talk about it, and sometimes we don’t. That’s why a simple question like “Are you OK?” can mean so much.

If someone you know has been quieter than usual, seems overwhelmed, or simply comes to mind today, reach out. Send a message, make a call, grab a coffee or sit with them.

You don’t need to have mental health training to make a difference. You don’t need the perfect words or all the answers.

Sometimes, simply showing up, listening without judgement and letting someone know you care is enough💛

So today, ask the question — and genuinely listen to the answer.
