Look who braved the reptiles this week!

Our Community Support Professional Jess took customer Phil out for a great day at the Australian Reptile Park. Days like this are what it's all about: staying active, staying connected, and getting out to enjoy everything the Central Coast has to offer.

Not sure where to start with in-home aged care?

Support at Home can help with everyday things like personal care, domestic help, transport, social support and nursing, so you or your parents can stay independent at home for longer. The first step is simpler than most people expect.

Your local Just Better Care office can walk you through it in plain English, with no obligation.

Today is R U OK? Day, a reminder that a simple conversation can make a real difference.

For older people, and for anyone spending a lot of time at home, days can pass without much contact. Asking someone how they are really going, and taking the time to listen, is a small thing that matters more than we often realise.

Check in on a neighbour, a parent, a friend. And if someone is not ok, staying connected and helping them reach the right support is one of the most valuable things any of us can do.

For information on how to have this conversation, read one of our latest news articles: https://www.justbettercare.com/news-events/r-u-ok-day-2026

If you already care for someone, you have more of the skills than you think.

Around 2.65 million Australians care for a family member or friend. That lived experience, patience and reliability is exactly what makes a great Support Worker.

Moving from unpaid carer to a paid Support Worker role takes only a few steps, and the work is flexible: part-time or casual hours that fit around family, study or other commitments. There is genuine demand for people like you in communities right across Australia.

How to make the switch:

Learn how to become a disability or NDIS support worker and turn your experience as a Carer into a rewarding support worker career. Steps, training and checks.

For families, AT-HM approval can feel like the finish line. In practice, it is the starting point.

The steps between approval and installation are where projects stall: booking a separate Occupational Therapist assessment, securing a property owner's consent for permanent modifications in a rental, and managing the wait on quotes and trades. Most of the people coordinating this are adult children, not the person receiving the care, and they are often navigating it for the first time.

A few questions asked early, especially around rental permissions and what a quote actually includes, are usually what separates a smooth installation from a stalled one. Worth flagging to anyone you support through the Support at Home process.

Thinking about a career in care but worried you are not qualified yet?

You do not always need a formal qualification to start. Many people begin while they study, as long as their screening checks and core safety training are in place. A caring nature matters just as much as a certificate.

At Just Better Care, every team member completes structured onboarding before their first visit, refreshes core skills each year, and has free access to more than 100 self-paced online courses. Training is what turns a caring nature into safe, confident, professional support.

The right support starts with the right team.

Participants tell us the thing that matters most is consistency: Support Workers who know your routine, your preferences and your goals, and who turn up reliably week to week.

Matching a team is a process, not a one-off decision. Your local Just Better Care office takes the time to understand your needs, your preferences and how you like to communicate before matching you with qualified, compassionate Support Workers. In our 2025 customer survey, 93 per cent of customers said they were happy with their matched Support Worker.

This is the first of four articles running throughout each week of September to mark 2026 Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. Part 1 seeks to understand dementia; it's an umbrella term for 100+ conditions, not a single disease, and it's Australia's leading cause of death. There are approximately 446,500 Australians currently living with dementia.

Read more:

This September, we're publishing a four-part series on dementia. Part 1 covers the basics: what dementia is, who it affects, and why the silence needs to end.

An hour of care is not an hour of wages.

When a price for in-home care looks higher than you expected, it helps to know what actually sits behind it: the worker in front of you, the travel time they are paid for, the clinical oversight of your plan, and the systems that keep it all safe and compliant.

Read the full breakdown:

An hour of care is not an hour of wages. What makes up in-home care pricing under Support at Home: the funding levels, what you contribute, and what providers cannot charge.
