REPOST FROM THE Australian Physiotherapy Association
___________
Almost 3 in 4 women experience joint or muscle pain in perimenopause, and women are 70% more likely than men to experience chronic pain.
This year’s World Menopause Day campaign theme is ‘CHRONIC PAIN AT MIDLIFE’, bringing together trusted information and guidance on how to support people going through this stage of life.
Chronic pain becomes more common during the menopause transition, yet it is significantly under researched.
Physiotherapists play a larger role in the menopause health journey than many may think.
Physiotherapy addresses the increased vulnerability of tendons, ligaments and joints during menopause. Focusing on strength, flexibility, and stability helps maintain musculoskeletal health and reduce pain and injury risk.
By providing targeted education and exercise prescription, physiotherapists can assist in slowing bone loss, enhance skeletal strength and maintain or improve muscle mass. This early intervention significantly reduces the risk of fractures and supports overall strength and function.
