โ˜€๏ธ What is Melanoma? ๐ŸŒค๏ธ

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that starts in the cells that give your skin its colour. While less common, itโ€™s the most dangerous because it can spread quickly if not detected early.

In Queensland, itโ€™s one of the most common cancers in both men and women.

๐Ÿ‘€ What to look for:
While assessing your skin, you can follow the ABCDE guide (see photo below) to help identify warning signs. If you notice any changes, please let us know and have one of our skin doctors check it for you. When in doubt, always get it checked.

๐Ÿ” Main types of melanoma's:
โ€ข Superficial spreading โ€“ most common, slow-growing at first
โ€ข Nodular โ€“ fast-growing and more aggressive
โ€ข Lentigo maligna โ€“ develops on sun-damaged skin over time
โ€ข Acral lentiginous โ€“ found on palms, soles, or under nails (rare)
โ€ข Desmoplastic โ€“ firm, scar-like and uncommon

๐Ÿ’ก Why it matters:
Early detection greatly improves treatment success.

โ˜€๏ธ What is Skin Cancer & Why Are Skin Checks So Important?

Skin cancer occurs when abnormal skin cells grow uncontrollablyโ€”and here in Australia, itโ€™s incredibly common. In fact, 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70.

There are three main types:
๐Ÿ”น Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
๐Ÿ”น Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
๐Ÿ”น Melanoma

While BCC and SCC are more common and often referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, melanoma can be more serious if not detected early. There are also rarer types that require specialised care.

๐Ÿ’ก Why early detection matters
Unlike some other cancers, skin cancer doesnโ€™t have a national screening programโ€”so regular skin checks are essential. Detecting changes early can make treatment simpler, more effective, and often less invasive.

๐Ÿ‘€ Know your skin
Keep an eye out for any new spots, changes in existing moles, or anything that doesnโ€™t healโ€”and donโ€™t ignore it.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ At Graceville Skin Cancer Clinic, Dr Norval and Dr Tang are highly experienced in diagnosing and treating all types of skin cancers. Our focus is on early detection, clear communication, and providing the highest standard of care for our patients.

๐Ÿ”Ž Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) โ€“ Know the Signs

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer, making up around 30% of cases. It develops in the squamous cells of the skin and is most commonly seen in people over 50.

Unlike some skin cancers, SCC can grow quite quickly over weeks or months. If left untreated, it can become invasive and spread to other parts of the body โ€” particularly when found on the lips or ears.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Early detection is important
When diagnosed early, SCC can usually be treated successfully.

๐Ÿ‘€ Signs and symptoms of SCC:
โ€ข A thickened, red, scaly or crusted spot
โ€ข A rapidly growing lump or sore
โ€ข A spot that may bleed, become inflamed or feel tender
โ€ข Commonly appears on sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck, hands, forearms and lower legs โ€” but can occur anywhere on the body

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, which is why regular skin checks are so important.

๐Ÿ“… If you notice any new, changing or unusual spots, book a skin check with our team at Graceville Skin Cancer Clinic.

๐Ÿ”Ž Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) โ€“ What You Need to Know

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of non-melanoma skin cancer, making up around 70% of cases. It begins in the basal cells of the skin and is most often seen in people over 40 โ€” but younger people can still be affected.

BCCs usually grow slowly over time and rarely spread to other parts of the body. However, once youโ€™ve had one, your risk of developing another increases โ€” and itโ€™s possible to have more than one at the same time.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Why early detection matters
When caught early, BCC is easier to treat. If left untreated, it can grow deeper into the skin and damage surrounding tissue, making treatment more complex.

๐Ÿ‘€ What to look out for:
โ€ข Spots on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, shoulders, arms or legs (but can appear anywhere)
โ€ข A pearly or shiny lump, or a pale/pink scaly patch
โ€ข A spot that bleeds, crusts, or doesnโ€™t heal properly
โ€ข A sore that seems to heal and then returns

If you notice any changes in your skin, donโ€™t ignore them.
