St John of God Accord

St John of God Accord For over 65 years, St John of God Accord has worked to make a difference in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

We are a values-based organisation that puts you, your goals and aspirations at the centre of what we do. Our caregivers are professional and skilled and they take responsibility for all their interactions and relationships. You can access our offerings throughout all metropolitan regions of Melbourne - North, East, South, and West. We are a not-for-profit organisation, established in 1953 as a pr

ovider of intellectual disability support. We merged with our parent organisation St John of God Health Care in 2007.

Every parent has one (or more!) daily battles they dread - in amongst all the great things about being a parent, of course!

For John, dad to Patrick, their nightly battle was reading. While the school provided books, they sat unopened, and because fiction wasn't his thing, no amount of encouraging was changing that.

Over time, Patrick's support worker Lance noticed Patrick lit up when learning about real things happening around the world - like news and current events. Lance did some research and introduced Patrick to KidsNews, a website with real news stories written for kids.

That was the turning point... Patrick now looks forward to reading! It's become a treasured part of their sessions together and his reading skills are growing because of it.

John put it best: "Lance is a great fit for Patrick. Introducing KidsNews has made a noticeable difference."

This is what person-centred support at Accord looks like. We don't follow a script. Instead, we get to know the person we work with, and find what works for them.

If you're navigating something similar with your child and looking for individualised support, we'd love to help!

Looking for one like-minded housemate to join a chatty but chill, calm and well-structured home in Doreen ๐ŸŒฟ

This modern home is shared by two relaxed, friendly women in their 30s and 40s who enjoy a happy, harmonious lifestyle with a genuine respect for each other's privacy and personal space. They're looking to welcome one female housemate who values routine, downtime, and a home that feels steady and comfortable day to day.

There's plenty of warmth and personality in this home. Both housemates are big Disney fans (expect movie marathons and the occasional musical sing-along). One also loves watching the footy. The ladies here enjoy walks through nearby parks and wetlands โ€” and yes, there are kangaroos, ducks, horses and more just around the corner. ๐Ÿฆ˜๐Ÿฆ†

Weeks are routine-based, with day programs and work keeping things structured โ€” and relaxed weekends to look forward to.

If this feels right to you, maybe it could be your home as well.

The biggest misconception about non-verbal communication is that speech reflects intelligence.โ
โ
When spoken language is treated as the main measure of understanding, non-speaking individuals can often be underestimated before theyโ€™ve had the chance to communicate in their own way.โ
โ
But communication is broader than speech. t can look like gestures, eye gaze, facial expression, behaviour, AAC, and other responses. These are all meaningful ways people connect, express themselves, and engage with the world around them.โ
โ
As one of our Speech Pathologists shared:โ
โ€œWhen we limit our definition of communication to speech, we shut the door on a personโ€™s intellect, autonomy, and identity.โ€โ
โ
A reminder that communication is not something to define for someone else but to recognise with openness, patience, and respect.โ

Growing up in the fresh air of the Dandenong Ranges, Melanie has always felt a natural connection to the outdoors โ€” a connection that continues to flourish in her beautiful garden ๐ŸŒฑ

Every afternoon when she gets home, Melanie heads straight to her backyard garden. She checks each plant, waters them carefully, and fills the bird bath. Itโ€™s a simple routine, but one that brings her a lot of calm and joy.

"Every seed she puts in the groupd, she tends like it matters. Because to her, it does," Melanie's support worker shared.

What started as one small garden bed has now grown into four thriving raised gardens, full of herbs and vegetables she picks for meals, colourful flowers that bright up the whole garden, and most recently, blueberries that Melanie planted herself.

A lovely reminder of how much joy can come from the things we nurture every day ๐Ÿ’š
