Milk production works on supply and demand… and your breasts are constantly taking notes.
Every time milk is effectively removed, whether by your baby or a pump, your body receives a message: WE NEED MORE !!
When milk is removed frequently and thoroughly, your body is encouraged to keep producing. When milk sits in the breast for longer periods of time, the message gradually becomes: we don’t need quite as much.
That’s why frequent milk removal matters so much when establishing or increasing supply. It’s also why simply pumping for longer isn’t always the answer, frequency and effective milk removal matter.
Especially in the early weeks, your body is learning how much milk your baby needs. Breastfeeding frequently, pumping when separated from baby, addressing ineffective milk transfer, and avoiding routinely going long stretches without removing milk can all help protect that developing supply.
And remember: supply and demand doesn’t mean every body will respond exactly the same way. Hormones, medications, breast anatomy, birth circumstances, medical conditions, prematurity, retained placental tissue, milk transfer, and many other factors can influence production.
So if you’re struggling with supply, the answer isn’t always “just pump more.”
Sometimes we need to figure out why the demand isn’t creating the expected supply.
Your milk supply is a conversation between your breasts and your baby.
The more effectively milk is requested and removed, the louder the message to keep making it! 🩷
