What is drug dependence?
Using drugs daily or very often over a period of time is particularly dangerous and can lead to physical and psychological changes, and behaviours can become increasingly drug-related.
The body adapts to the presence of the drug, so that more of the drug is needed to get the same effect as before. This is what is meant by tolerance. Dependence can occur with regular use. The person's thinking and actions come to be centred on the drug. If the drug is stopped or reduced, the person may experience cravings, or intrusive thoughts about the drug.
The person may continue to use the drug despite the negative consequences of doing so, on relationships, work, finances and their health.
Being dependent on drugs can lead to lots of problems:
Having no money - not being able to pay the rent or buy food because you've spent all your money on drugs.
Getting into trouble with the law - getting arrested for bad behaviour when affected by drugs.
Family or relationship problems due to the drug use - having fights because of what you're like when you're on drugs.
Health problems due to drug use - getting really sick from whatever it is that you've taken.
Getting sacked from work or failing school - not rocking up to school or work because you're 'coming down' or just not interested anymore.
What to do in a crisis?
If someone is unconscious or in trouble you must call 000 and ask for the ambulance immediately.
Police are not called out unless the ambulance officers call for help or a death occurs. If you are unsure if it is an emergency you can still call the ambulance for help. Ambulance officers will assist over the phone while the ambulance is coming.
How can a young person get help or treatment for a drug problem?
Help for drug problems is available. The best place to start is to ring the Alcohol & Drug Information Service on 1300 13 1340. A trained counsellor can discuss the range of options with you. These may include counselling, support groups or medical treatment, depending on the type of problem. The counsellor will listen to you and help work out with you the best option for you.
