Did you know dementia is the leading cause of death among women in Australia? Or that factors like hearing problems and high blood pressure can also increase your risk?

The 2025 National Women's Health Survey, conducted in collaboration with Dementia Australia, explored women's awareness of dementia risk and prevention.

Some of the ways you can support your brain health and help reduce your risk include:

Today is Daffodil Day. Are you aware that you may be eligible for the below cancer screening programs -

🌼 Cervical cancer - women aged 25-74 are encouraged to have a cervical screening every 5 years. Swabs can now be self collected if you are more comfortable doing it that way, but you will still need to book an appointment with your GP. 👭

🌼 Bowel cancer - from 1 July the Government lowered the age of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program from 50 to 45. 🧻

🌼 Breast screening is recommended for women aged 50-74 and repeated every two years. 🎀

🌼 The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is a free Australian Government initiative designed to detect lung cancer early, before symptoms appear, for those who are high risk. Check the website for eligibility. 🫁

🌼 Early detection tests are available for prostate cancer, ovarian cancer. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑👭

⚠️ Medicare – Requirements ⚠️

As a private, pay-on-the-day mixed billing clinic, all patients are required to visit the Accounts Department after their appointment and before leaving the clinic.

We are currently experiencing a number of patients leaving the clinic without attending the Accounts Department, as well as not actioning SMS messages they receive regarding their phone consultations.

From 1 July, if your doctor has elected to bulk bill your consultation, Medicare Assignment of Benefit consent and your signature must be obtained before the consultation can be bulk billed.

This process needs to be completed before leaving the clinic, or by promptly actioning any SMS you receive after your consultation, particularly for phone consultations.

Failure to complete the required consent process will result in a private fee being charged. You will then be responsible for paying the full consultation fee and claiming your eligible Medicare rebate directly from Medicare.

Once an invoice has been generated, we are unable to add or remove the consultation from the billing system or retrospectively change the billing arrangement.

So please remember:

⛔️ All patients must attend the Accounts Department after their appointment and before leaving the clinic.

⛔️ If you receive an SMS regarding your consultation, particularly for phone consultations requiring Medicare consent to bulk bill, please action it promptly.

⛔️ Failure to complete the required consent process will result in a private fee being charged.

Once an invoice has been generated, we are unable to retrospectively change the billing arrangement.

⛔️ If you have any questions or are unsure what you need to do, please speak with our Accounts Department staff.

Visiting the Accounts Department before leaving, or promptly actioning any SMS received after a phone consultation, helps ensure your consultation is processed correctly and avoids an unexpected account being issued.

Daffodil Day raises vital funds to support cancer research and improve outcomes for people living with cancer.

Daffodil Day has come a long way over the past 40 years, and we hope the next 40 years of cancer research will bring us closer to a future where everyone diagnosed with cancer has the best possible chance of living well, with a treatment plan that’s right for them.

H5N1 detected in Southern Grampians: What you need to know

A single greater crested tern found in Hamilton this week has tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza.

While the risk to human health remains very low, we’re asking our community to remain vigilant and help authorities monitor the situation.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:

AVOID
Do not touch sick or dead wildlife or areas they may have been in contact with.

RECORD
Take note of what you see and where you saw it. If it is safe to do so, photos or video can also help authorities.

REPORT
If you see the following, please report:
• A single sick or dead seabird, waterbird, shorebird, bird of prey or marine mammal
• Five or more sick or dead wild birds of any species

Reports can be made to Agriculture Victoria or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Signs of avian influenza in birds can include sudden death, difficulty standing or flying, tremors, lack of coordination, breathing difficulties, swelling around the eyes or head, and unusual behaviour.

Poultry owners are also encouraged to review their biosecurity measures, including limiting contact between domestic poultry and wild birds, keeping facilities clean and practising good hygiene when handling birds or eggs.

Council is working with relevant state agencies and supporting community awareness across the Southern Grampians.
