Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums, grandmothers, carers and mother figures I have the privilege of working with ❤️

Behind every appointment, every exercise practised at home, every lifestyle change, every late night, every school pick-up, every emotional moment, and every little win… is a parent showing up again and again for their child.

I see the effort you put in.
I see the research, the questions, the worry, the advocacy, the patience and the love.

Thank you for trusting me to be part of your family’s journey and allowing me to support your children and their health. It is never lost on me how much dedication goes into helping a child thrive, and so much of that comes from you.

To the mums doing all the things — often quietly, behind the scenes — you are doing an amazing job.

Wishing you a day where you feel appreciated, celebrated and deeply loved. 🌸✨

So my son has a dust mite allergy. And honestly, I was surprised. Not because it’s uncommon (it’s actually very common), but because he doesn’t have the “typical allergy kid” symptoms.

No constant sneezing.
No obvious congestion.
No itchy, watery eyes.
No chronic cough.

But this is what I see all the time in clinic — airway inflammation isn’t always loud or obvious.

Sometimes it shows up as:
• Slightly enlarged turbinates
• Mild adenoid hypertrophy
• Subtle nasal resistance
• Mouth breathing tendencies
• Restless or disturbed sleep
• Dry mouth on waking
• Snoring
• Dark circles
• Daytime fatigue, irritability, or poor focus

It can be chronic low-grade airway inflammation quietly flying under the radar.

And when you zoom out, this can start to influence:
• Breathing patterns (more mouth breathing vs nasal breathing)
• Sleep quality and how deeply they rest
• Behaviour, focus, and regulation
• Oral function
• How the face grows over time

Not in an obvious overnight way — but slowly, subtly, over years.

So what do we actually do about it?

We don’t aim for perfection. We just reduce the overall allergen load, especially overnight.

Some simple changes can make a huge difference:
✔️ Wash bedding weekly in 60°C water
✔️ Use full zippered mattress, pillow, and doona protectors
✔️ Keep bedroom humidity around 40–50%
✔️ Open the room daily for airflow
✔️ Vacuum regularly with a HEPA filter if possible
✔️ Air filter in bedroom
✔️ Minimise dust reservoirs:
– Soft toys
– Carpets
– Heavy fabric curtains
– Fabric bedheads
– Excess cushions and blankets

Because kids spend 8–12 hours breathing in their bedrooms every single night.

It’s not about creating a sterile home. It’s about creating an environment that supports easy nasal breathing and quality sleep.
