One of the most memorable moments of our time in Kyoto wasn’t visiting a temple or garden—it was sitting with a maiko and asking her a question about beauty.
Her answer reminded me that beauty is never fixed. It’s shaped by culture, history and the values we inherit.
In a world that often encourages us to be bigger, bolder and more noticeable, Kyoto’s traditional ideals celebrate something different: refinement, grace and quiet elegance.
As a Nurse Practitioner in aesthetic medicine, I found that perspective incredibly thought-provoking. It wasn’t about deciding which version of beauty is “right”, it was a reminder that there isn’t just one ideal.
Sometimes the most captivating beauty isn’t the one that shouts the loudest.
It’s the one that whispers.
