Good news for our older patients!

The RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine is now free under the National Immunisation Program for:

βœ… Adults aged 75 years and over
βœ… Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

RSV is a common respiratory virus that can cause serious illness in older adults. As this post from Asthma Australia highlights, people with asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions are at higher risk of severe symptoms.

If you’re eligible, you can receive the free RSV vaccine here at Main Street Medical Centre β€” often in the same appointment as your flu and COVID vaccines. As a bulk-billing practice, the consultation is covered by Medicare for eligible cardholders.

Not sure if it’s right for you? Have a chat with your GP.

No needle? No problem.

If your child dreads the jab β€” and plenty of Hervey Bay kids do β€” there's now a needle-free way to protect them this flu season.

A nasal spray flu vaccine is available for children aged 2 to 17 through the Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program. It's a quick spray in each nostril, no injection. The program was recently expanded so older children, not just the little ones, can choose the spray too.

And it's free. Under the Queensland Government's 2026 Free Flu Vaccination Program, every Queenslander aged 6 months and over can be vaccinated against the flu at no cost until 30 September 2026.

A couple of things worth knowing about the nasal spray:
πŸ”Ή No preservatives (no thiomersal), and the applicator is latex-free
πŸ”Ή It does contain a small amount of pork-derived gelatine. If that's a consideration for your family for faith or personal reasons, Queensland Health has clear guidance β€” and your GP is happy to talk it through.

Flu season on the Fraser Coast hasn't peaked yet, so there's still good reason to get the family protected. Whether your child prefers the spray or the needle, our GPs will help you decide what's right for them.

Book online or give us a call β€” we'll find a time that suits.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers when caught early β€” and Australia has a free national screening program for people aged 45 to 74.

If you're 50–74, your free home test kit is automatically posted every two years. If you're 45–49, you can request your first kit through the National Cancer Screening Register (ncsr.gov.au) β€” your GP can help you understand the results.

Have questions about bowel screening, family history, or symptoms? Book in with a GP at Main Street Medical Centre.

Finding a regular GP is one of those things that's easy to put off β€” until the day you really wish you hadn't.

Main Street Medical Centre is welcoming new patients across Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast. We've cared for local families for more than 30 years, and having a regular GP means your health is looked after by someone who knows your history β€” not started from scratch every visit.

Family general practice, skin checks and skin cancer care, women's and children's health, chronic disease management, immunisations, ear care and more β€” all in one place, with male and female GPs to choose from.

Bulk billing is available for eligible Medicare card holders. We're open Monday to Friday, 7:30am–5:30pm.

Booking your first appointment takes just a couple of minutes.

The summer's over. Your skin remembers.

Months of sun, salt, and Fraser Coast UV add up β€” and most of it shows up where you can't easily see it. The back. The shoulders. The tops of the ears. The scalp.

A full body skin check is a thorough top-to-toe look at your skin by a GP with a clinical focus on skin cancer medicine, using digital dermoscopy to map any spots that need closer attention. If something looks suspicious, our doctors can investigate further on site β€” including surgical excisions, flaps and grafts.

Skin checks are recommended annually for most Australians, or more often if you've had a lot of sun exposure, a family history of skin cancer, or previous skin cancers.

Sleeves up, Hervey Bay. πŸ’‰

Flu season has well and truly arrived on the Fraser Coast. Our nurses are vaccinating patients every day this week β€” quick visits, friendly faces, in and out before you know it.

We have flu vaccinations in stock for all ages, from 6 months to seniors. COVID-19 vaccinations are also available β€” chat to your GP about whether you're due for one.

Can't make a weekday? We're opening this Saturday 16 May, 9am–12pm as a once-off β€” book online and select the 'Flu Clinic' appointment type.

Big thanks to our nursing team for getting everyone sorted with a smile this season. πŸ’›
