Our thoughts are with Nepal

The ANMF Tasmanian Branch acknowledges the devastating floods and their profound impact on communities across Nepal.

We are thinking of everyone affected. The families who have lost loved ones, those awaiting news of family and friends who remain missing, and those whose homes, livelihoods and communities have been devastated.

We also recognise the dedicated healthcare workers and emergency responders caring for their communities through this unimaginable crisis, while facing its impacts themselves.

To our nursing and healthcare colleagues in Nepal: we stand with you in solidarity. 💙

Faye Hoppitt ANMF Workplace Delegate of the Year 2026

We were delighted to recently present Wendy Erglis with the Faye Hoppitt Workplace Delegate of the Year Award, recognising her outstanding commitment to her colleagues and to the nursing profession.

A Workplace Delegate for the ANMF and a union member throughout her 45-year nursing career, Wendy knows the difference strong advocacy and solidarity can make.

In her acceptance speech, Wendy reflected on the challenges facing nurses and midwives across Tasmania and paid tribute to those who continue to care and advocate for their patients every day.

And, with characteristic nursing humour, she reminded us:

“Every nurse and midwife knows you can achieve the unachievable so long as you have enough micropore.”

Wendy’s message is simple and powerful: in challenging times, ANMF membership matters and supporting and protecting our nursing and midwifery colleagues is everyone’s responsibility.

Congratulations, Wendy, and thank you for 45 years of commitment, advocacy and service.

We know how challenging the environment is for our members right now… workloads are high, staffing pressures are severe, and the conditions you work under continue to push you to the limit.

While some unions are calling for an immediate offer, ANMF Tasmania is focused on delivering real solutions, not quick fixes.

We are fighting to ensure the lead negotiator fully understands all 73 of your member claims, including:
🔹 Safe staffing levels to mitigate high workloads.
🔹 Protection for your health, safety, and wellbeing.

HESTA made some important changes to insurance starting 1 July 2026, including reduced insurance fees for eligible HESTA Super and HESTA Personal Super members.

They've also rolled out a feature available to all HESTA members, known as non-lapsing binding death benefit nominations. This means you can tell them who you want your super to go to, with no need to renew it unless your circumstances change.

Only 47% of Tasmanian ED patients had their care completed within four hours in 2024–25.

That’s down from 58% in 2020–21.

The system is under pressure.

When patients can’t move through the system, care can’t flow.
Care can’t flow when the system is blocked.

TEA BREAKS “Did someone say tea break?”

The Expectation:
A hot beverage, a sweet treat and a moment to catch your breath.

The Reality:
A frantic dash for a sip of water while running on empty.

For nurses and midwives, a “tea break” shouldn’t be a mythical creature you hear about but never actually see. Skipping rest periods and working through without time to hydrate has become far too normal.

We’re fighting for paid tea breaks so our members have a genuine opportunity to stop, hydrate and reset during their shift.

Your breaks matter. Your safety matters. The ANMF has your back.
