It was a strong turnout from across Wyndham, Point Cook, Altona and the wider western suburbs. Plenty of familiar faces from practices we have worked with for years, and a good number of people we were meeting for the first time. That mix is the reason we keep running these locally rather than in the city.

Dr Vidya Iyer, oral medicine specialist, presented on the night, followed by Dr Lon Kang and Dr Claire Furness. The evening closed with a Q and A with Dr Felix Sim on combined orthodontic and surgical cases, which drew most of the discussion.

Thanks to the local dental community for giving up a weeknight, and to The Look Orthodontists for co-hosting.

When a patient was admitted with a serious joint infection of unknown cause, our team was called in to investigate. We identified a rare bacterium typically found in Northern Australia, allowing the patient to receive the treatment they urgently needed.

When we think of oral health we often just think of teeth and gums. Monitoring the soft tissues of your mouth is equally crucial.

Many non-complex oral cancers are picked up during routine checkups with a general dentist. If your dentist notices something unusual they will refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a specialist assessment and biopsy.

If you notice a mouth ulcer that has not healed after two weeks, we recommend you book an assessment promptly.

Dr Jarren Wang will be speaking on common oral surgery problems, how to manage them and how to avoid them in the first place. The session is built around what turns up in general practice, from planned surgical extractions through to the unexpected issues following a simple extraction.
Dr Wang is a dual qualified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with public appointments at Austin Health. He consults at our Werribee, Glen Iris, Patterson Lakes, Frankston and Box Hill rooms.
