“Wait... so what do you actually do?”

A question that Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists know well.

The answer is usually a unique combination of tailored supports, guided by the client and their caregivers, in areas such as communication, movement, play, regulation, sensory experiences, problem solving, mealtimes, learning, connection, self care, independence and inclusion.

It might be hard to explain, but it’s what makes our jobs so much fun.

Executive functioning is often described as the brain's "management system", helping us plan, organise, remember information, regulate emotions and navigate everyday tasks.

For many neurodivergent children, including children with ADHD and autistic children, executive functioning demands can require significant effort. This is not a reflection of intelligence, motivation or capability. Rather, it highlights the importance of providing supports that align with the way a child thinks, learns and experiences the world.

Simple strategies such as visual supports, predictable routines, reducing unnecessary demands on memory, and breaking tasks into manageable steps can make everyday activities feel more accessible.

Executive functioning skills continue developing across childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. With the right supports in place, children can build confidence, independence and a greater sense of success in their daily lives.

Small adjustments can often make a meaningful difference.

We’re hiring at SPOT 💛

We’re looking for an Occupational Therapist to join our team for a 10-month parental leave contract from May 2026 to March 2027, with the potential for an ongoing part-time role.

At SPOT, we are a collaborative team of Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists working primarily in-clinic with some community based work for individual clients and as part of the Flying Start Initiative.

This role offers the opportunity to deliver in-clinic therapy, work alongside speech pathologists in SPOT sessions, and support children and their caregivers across areas such as regulation, sensory processing, motor skills and independence.

This role presents an opportunity for a clinician to gain valuable skills, learning and professional development with no long term commitment, perfect for someone looking for a transition between roles or an opportunity to work in private practice and come across from a different setting.

We value a supportive team culture, ongoing learning with weekly opportunities for professional development, mentoring and support, end of day flexibility and work from home during school holidays.

We’re looking for a clinician who is compassionate, motivated, and committed to neuro-affirming, strengths-based, family-centred care.

If this sounds like you and you’d like more information on the role, we’d love to hear from you. Send your resume and cover letter to [email protected]

At SPOT, it has been incredibly valuable spending time out in early learning environments as our Preschool Boost supports continue across a number of our local centres.

A large part of this work involves working alongside educators within children’s everyday environments, learning from them and collaborating on how best to support routines, relationships, strengths and the challenges that can arise across the day in areas such as communication, regulation, social interaction and motor development.

Our Preschool Boost supports are grounded in collaboration and best practice in early intervention, with a strong focus on practical strategies that can be embedded naturally into everyday routines and play. This includes supporting educators through coaching, collaborative problem solving and tailored recommendations that align with the needs of each individual site.

One of the things we value most about this work is the opportunity to collaborate with educators who are deeply committed to supporting children’s development and wellbeing. It has been a privilege to learn alongside the teams we’ve met so far and to see the care and intention they bring to their roles each day.

We’re looking forward to continuing this work throughout the year and supporting children within the environments where they learn, play and connect every day.

Welcome to the first instalment of our “1 Minute with a Therapist” series.

In this video, Speech Pathologist Amara shares a little about her role at SPOT, including the many ways Speech Pathologists support communication beyond spoken words alone.

At SPOT, we value a total communication approach, recognising and supporting all forms of communication, from speech and AAC, to body language, gestures and Key Word Sign.

One of the things we love most about this conversation is the reminder that communication is deeply individual, and that understanding a child’s unique communication style can make such a meaningful difference for both children and families.

We’re excited to continue this series and introduce you to more of the team along the way.

Over the last two days, SPOT Director Eilis had the wonderful opportunity to attend the PRECI National Conference, spending time immersed in conversations around best practice in early intervention.

It was such a valuable few days of learning, reflecting and connecting with others who are equally passionate about supporting children and families in meaningful, evidence-informed ways.

One of the highlights was a workshop with Mary-Louise Hemmeter exploring Practice Based Coaching and the important role collaboration and reflective practice play in supporting positive outcomes for children.

There is so much thoughtful and exciting work happening in the early intervention space, and it was a privilege to be part of these conversations.

Thank you to for hosting such an inspiring conference.

Yarning Circles are an important Indigenous practice centred around connection, storytelling and deep listening.

They remind us of the value of slowing down, making space for every voice, and taking the time to truly understand one another.

At SPOT, this idea of listening with intention and respect is something we carry into our work with children and families each day. Building strong relationships and understanding each individual’s experience is at the heart of meaningful, supportive care.

We are grateful to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for the knowledge, culture and ways of connecting that continue to guide and inform practice.

Today, we celebrate and acknowledge all mothers and maternal figures, including mums, grandmothers, carers, foster mums, step-mums, aunties and the many people who show up with love, care and support in a child’s life.

At SPOT, we have the privilege of seeing the countless ways caregivers advocate for, support and deeply understand their children every day. For many families raising children, this can often involve navigating systems, adapting routines, holding space for big emotions, celebrating progress that others may overlook and continually learning alongside their child.

The care, connection and acceptance you offer your child matters deeply.

To all the maternal figures in our community, thank you for all that you do, often quietly and behind the scenes.

We hope today feels gentle, supportive and meaningful in whatever way is right for you.
