UNDERSTANDING YOGA STYLES - Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga (Thursday at 5.30pm) is all about downregulating the nervous system - shifting your body and mind into a calm and relaxed state. I suggest all classes at Tamarind Studio have this as their goal although other styles incorporate additional benefits.
Restorative class incorporates poses focussed purely on comfort, guided deep breathing to influence the nervous system, and prompts to cultivate and maintain a habit of mindfulness. These are tools that extend beyond the class - with both an immediate and ongoing physiological benefit and also extending your ability to practice presence and awareness in the everyday moments of your life.
Restorative for many can be a complete reset that brings them back down to earth from injury or exhaustion. Incorporating this into your regular practice is the means to prevent injury or exhaustion in the first place - through awareness of where you're heading through mindful observation - along with consciously committing to restore relaxation and calm as a necessary balance against the demands we place on our body and mind.
Nearly all poses will be either laying on our back, side or stomach - utilising props such as bolsters, blocks and a cushion. If you have a busy lifestyle of constant movement and engagement you may recognise restorative could bring a needed balance yet struggle to be still and silent. In this circumstance I'd recommend Vin Yin as an entry point.
