☯️ Why do Acupuncturists and Chinese Medicine Practitioners so often have cats?

(Meet Bug 🐈‍⬛)

Because cats have mastered the art of Chinese medicine without ever opening a textbook.

They sleep when they’re tired, stretch every channel every morning, bask in the sun to warm their Yang, disappear when overstimulated to protect their Shen, eat when hungry, stop when full, and have absolutely no interest in people-pleasing.

Meanwhile, Chinese medicine practitioners spend years studying how to get humans to do the same things.

On a more serious note, there probably is some truth to the stereotype. People drawn to acupuncture and Chinese medicine often value calm environments, observation, routine, and a connection with nature, which are all traits that tend to pair well with cat ownership. Cats also fit nicely into the quieter, slower-paced atmosphere many practitioners create in their homes.

That said, plenty of acupuncturists are dog people too…they’re just usually out walking their dogs while the cat-owning practitioners are inside drinking herbal tea and talking about Yin deficiency. 🤭

😸☯️ “The cat is not lazy. The cat is conserving Jing.”

🌿 Why Take Nutrition Advice from an Acupuncturist?

Because food isn’t just fuel, it’s information for your body.

As an Acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine Practitioners, we’re trained to understand how food influences digestion, energy, sleep, hormones, circulation, mood, and overall wellbeing. We don’t just look at nutrients on a label, we look at the patterns your body is expressing and how food can be used to support healing and restore function.

Chinese Nutrition Therapy is a core part of Chinese Medicine and has been used for thousands of years alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine. Foods are viewed according to their qualities, actions, flavours, and effects on the body, allowing dietary recommendations to be tailored to the individual rather than applied broadly to everyone.

Acupuncture may only happen once a week or once a month, but food is something you interact with every single day. Every meal is an opportunity to support your health, nourish your body, and reinforce the benefits of your treatment.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s balance. By choosing foods that work with your body rather than against it, we can help restore harmony, support the body’s natural healing processes, and create a stronger foundation for long-term health and wellbeing. 🌿✨

🪾Winter in Chinese Medicine: A Season to Slow Down and Restore

In Chinese Medicine, winter is associated with the Kidneys, our deepest reserve of energy, vitality and resilience. Just as the trees conserve their energy beneath the surface, our bodies naturally seek more rest, warmth and nourishment during this season.

If we continue to push ourselves at the same pace, we can gradually deplete these reserves, leaving us feeling tired, run down, achy, anxious or more susceptible to illness.

Winter is the season of restoration, reflection and replenishment.

🌿 You can support your body this winter by:

• Prioritising sleep and allowing yourself extra rest when needed.
• Choosing warm, cooked meals such as soups, broths, casseroles and slow-cooked foods.
• Reducing excessive cold foods and drinks, including iced beverages, smoothies and large salads.
• Keeping the lower back, neck and feet warm, areas closely linked to the Kidney system in TCM.
• Enjoying gentle movement such as walking, stretching, qi gong, tai chi or yoga rather than constantly pushing through intense exercise.
• Taking time for quiet reflection, journaling or meditation to nourish both body and mind.
• Eating seasonal root vegetables, warming spices and mineral-rich foods that help build strength from within.

Just as nature rests beneath the fog, sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause, nourish ourselves and trust the process of renewal.

✨ Winter is also an excellent time for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Treatments can help support immunity, improve circulation, promote better sleep, ease aches and pains, and strengthen the body’s natural reserves so you enter spring feeling healthier, stronger and more energized.

Abdominal acupuncture is about more than just digestion.
In Chinese Medicine, the tummy is considered the centre of energy, circulation, hormones and nervous system balance. When this area becomes stagnant or weakened, symptoms can show up throughout the whole body.

Tummy treatments may help support digestion, bloating, IBS symptoms, reflux, constipation, stress, fatigue, sleep, hormonal balance and overall wellbeing. 🌿

Many people find abdominal acupuncture deeply calming, grounding and relaxing — helping the body shift into a better state for healing and recovery.
