Winter in Chinese Medicine: A Season to Slow Down and Restore
In Chinese Medicine, winter is associated with the Kidneys, our deepest reserve of energy, vitality and resilience. Just as the trees conserve their energy beneath the surface, our bodies naturally seek more rest, warmth and nourishment during this season.
If we continue to push ourselves at the same pace, we can gradually deplete these reserves, leaving us feeling tired, run down, achy, anxious or more susceptible to illness.
Winter is the season of restoration, reflection and replenishment.
🌿 You can support your body this winter by:
• Prioritising sleep and allowing yourself extra rest when needed.
• Choosing warm, cooked meals such as soups, broths, casseroles and slow-cooked foods.
• Reducing excessive cold foods and drinks, including iced beverages, smoothies and large salads.
• Keeping the lower back, neck and feet warm, areas closely linked to the Kidney system in TCM.
• Enjoying gentle movement such as walking, stretching, qi gong, tai chi or yoga rather than constantly pushing through intense exercise.
• Taking time for quiet reflection, journaling or meditation to nourish both body and mind.
• Eating seasonal root vegetables, warming spices and mineral-rich foods that help build strength from within.
Just as nature rests beneath the fog, sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause, nourish ourselves and trust the process of renewal.
✨ Winter is also an excellent time for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Treatments can help support immunity, improve circulation, promote better sleep, ease aches and pains, and strengthen the body’s natural reserves so you enter spring feeling healthier, stronger and more energized.
