After completing two Kalgoorlie placements, one with Hayley as her supervisor, Alanna has returned permanently to the Goldfields, beginning her career as a new graduate Occupational Therapist. Their journey highlights the lasting impact of clinical supervision - demonstrating how a supervisor can strengthen student learning and bolster their own clinical experience, while also supporting the growth of a sustainable rural workforce.

By opening their doors to students, clinicians can support hands-on learning while helping to grow a skilled, locally connected health workforce for their community. We hope their experience inspires more clinicians to step into a supervisory role and support future students like Alanna.

🥐 💬 The GUDRH recently hosted a three-part Breakfast Series, bringing together 19 local allied health professionals to connect, share insights and explore solutions to workforce challenges in the Goldfields. Conversations focused on strengthening student placement opportunities and building ongoing collaboration through a local Community of Practice.

It was encouraging to see so many passionate clinicians in the room, all contributing to the health and wellbeing of the community. 🫶🐜 GUDRH staff and students came together during National Reconciliation Week to connect, learn and reflect through a series of meaningful cultural experiences. From a special morning tea and yarning session with local Wangkatha Elders - Senior Elder Nanna Maisie Harkin, Aunty Miriam Brownley and Aunty Jennifer Bevan - to an immersive on Country Honey Ant Tour with the Ulrich family, exploring traditional bushfoods that have sustained the Tjupan people for thousands of years, these moments highlight GUDRH’s commitment to culturally informed learning and respectful practice in rural and remote communities. 🧡 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 👉 https://www.curtin.edu.au/news/connection-and-learning-at-the-heart-of-gudrhs-national-reconciliation-week/

🤝Thank you to everyone who came out and visited our ‘Go Rural!’ stall at Curtin Open Day yesterday. We got to connect with many prospective health science students and their families, and really appreciated the support of our additional volunteers, Holly and Alanna - former OT students who completed placements in the Goldfields through our UDRH and are now working in the region.

They had plenty of meaningful conversations with future students and were able to share their firsthand experiences of studying, training and now working in the Goldfields.

🚙 Our team recently completed a full-day 4WD driver training session with Riklan Emergency Management Services, building the skills and confidence required to safely access remote areas across the Goldfields. This training is essential for our team, who regularly travel across the region into our Northern Goldfields communities and south to Norseman and Esperance.

The hands-on training covered key practical skills and safety knowledge - from understanding different 4WD systems and preparing vehicles for remote travel, to changing tyres, completing pre-start checks and planning journeys. Staff also practiced navigating challenging terrain, emergency braking, along with recovery techniques.

👏 Thanks to Riklan for delivering such a practical and valuable session that helps keep our team safe on the road.

🤕🩺The GUDRH recently delivered a three-day Interprofessional Simulation event at Curtin University's Rural Health Campus in Kalgoorlie, reinforcing the value of interprofessional collaborative practice by supporting students to build the practical teamwork skills required to drive strong patient outcomes in rural healthcare.

Following a two-day National Health Education and Training in Simulation (NHETS) workshop for Curtin University and WA Country Health Service (WACHS) staff, the third day brought together 26 students from Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and Social Work. Together they utilised our purpose‑built Sim Room, where they worked through 7 scenarios spanning 4 Emergency Department settings and 3 outpatient situations 🩻🩹

🩺 A group of GUDRH nursing students recently joined the 'Rethinking Hepatitis B Care in Regional and Rural Areas' event hosted by Goldfields Health Professionals Network. Beyond the session itself, our students were able to connect one-on-one with the presenting nurse practitioner, gaining valuable insights into training pathways and nursing specialities.

🧡 It's wonderful to see our students embracing these opportunities and maximising the education sessions on offer in the Goldfields.
