Do you support local?

‘Shop Local’ is promoted all the time because we know that if we don’t, especially in our smaller communities, shops will shut and we will lose those businesses.

But what about those small businesses without a shop front??
What about your local equine professionals?? Bodyworkers, massage therapists, farriers etc…

I’ve chatted with all kinds of equine professionals from a variety of different areas and there is a common theme; They are generally not well supported by the people in their own local areas. By their neighbours.

The majority of their clientele involves travel elsewhere!

Why?

Whether they realise it or not, many horse owners have the idea that if a professional has to travel from somewhere else, then they must be better…

But why can’t Joey down the road be as good as someone from 300kms away? Potentially they even studied the same course - maybe even at the same time!!

Undoubtedly every professional has experiences, strengths and techniques unique to them, and I often recommend other professionals to my own clients for their expertise - because it’s all about what’s best for the horse!

But the further a professional needs to travel the less available they will be due to the time and expenses involved - and it’s not always easy to get the numbers needed for a viable run.

If you support your locals, then not only will they be available as often as your horse requires their services, but they will be there when the unexpected happens and you suddenly need them “this week”!

Your equine professionals are also human, they have lives and families too. Lives that they somehow try to fit around working early and late, weekdays and weekends, rain, hail and heat - because they care for your horses and want to make a positive difference in their lives.

But if you don’t look after them, then one day they won’t be there.

Support your locals, so that they can support you.🩵

September begins with the PEMF machine in transit to have its scheduled service next week!

Freight does take up a little time, but when it returns those who are on the wait list will be contacted first and appointments will continue as usual.

Another great example of practical equine research coming out of CSU Equine Sciences!

A new study by undergraduate researcher Brynne Murphy and Dr. Devan Catalano asked a simple question that comes up frequently in horse management: Does it matter whether horses are offered salt as a block or loose in a pan?

Sixteen horses were offered both loose white salt and compressed white salt blocks over four 7-day periods. While horses tended to consume more loose salt (41 g/day) than block salt (32 g/day), salt form did not significantly affect intake. What mattered much more was the individual horse - daily consumption ranged from just 2 g to 135 g.

Perhaps the most important finding for horse owners: 9 of the 16 horses did not voluntarily consume enough salt to meet their sodium requirements, even after accounting for sodium provided by their regular diet. Water intake was similarly highly individual and was not affected by whether salt was offered loose or as a block.

The takeaway? Providing free-choice salt does not necessarily mean a horse is consuming enough. Knowing your individual horse, workload, and diet is important - and for horses that do not voluntarily consume adequate salt, adding the appropriate amount directly to the daily ration may be the more reliable approach.

We are especially proud that this work was conducted by an undergraduate student, highlighting the important role undergraduate research plays within CSU Equine Sciences. Giving students the opportunity to take an applied question from study design and data collection all the way through presentation and publication is an important part of training the next generation of equine scientists.

Congratulations to the authors on a great publication and a project with information horse owners can put into practice immediately!

Then off to see the last few horses booked for their PEMF therapy sessions, before packing up the Pulse machine and delivering it to the freight depot this afternoon - it’s on its way for its service in NSW!
