ACL INJURIES ON THE RISE IN THE AFL
The 2025 & 2026 AFL season has already seen a concerning rise in ACL injuries compared to the same stage in previous seasons.
But here’s the important context: this increase is currently being seen at the ELITE level.
What about community sport?
At the community level, ACL injuries remain a major issue — especially in football, netball, basketball, soccer, and change-of-direction sports.
ACL injuries commonly occur during:
• Cutting and pivoting
• Landing mechanics
• Deceleration
• Fatigue-related movement breakdown
• Poor load management and recovery
Research suggests several factors may be contributing to the increased prevalence at the elite level:
• Increased game speed and intensity
• Higher cumulative training and match loads
• Reduced recovery windows between games
• Fatigue accumulation across long seasons
• Greater physical demands during high-speed efforts
• Improved injury reporting and surveillance
The bigger question is:
Are community athletes doing enough PRE-HAB before injuries happen?
Research consistently shows that structured prehabilitation and performance programming can significantly reduce ACL injury risk.
Key focus areas include:
✔️ Strength development
✔️ Single leg control and stability
✔️ Landing and cutting mechanics
✔️ Hamstring and glute strength
✔️ Change of direction training
✔️ Load management and recovery
✔️ Sport-specific movement preparation
