Did you know??
Kids aren’t born knowing how to stay calm, cope, or regulate big feelings.
Before they can do that on their own… they borrow our nervous system.
From an OT perspective, co-regulation comes first.
When a child is overwhelmed, their brain is not ready to problem-solve, listen, or “use their words.” What they need most is a calm, steady adult to help bring their system back to baseline.
Your calm voice
Your slowed breathing
Your presence
These aren’t extras—they’re the foundation.
Over time, these repeated experiences build the child’s ability to:
Self-soothe
Manage frustration
Stay organised and focused
Navigate challenges independently
So when a child is melting down, shutting down, or pushing limits…
It’s not about “attention-seeking” or being “too much.”
It’s a sign their system is overloaded.
Instead of: “They need to calm down”
Try: “They need help to calm down”
Because regulation is learned through connection—not control.
You’re not just managing behaviour.
You’re helping build a brain.
